A useful fit for

Choose this 4.2 L model if app-selected humidity control, a display, Auto and voice options matter more than a larger tank; the cited 432 sq ft is a maker claim, not a room guarantee.

The main tradeoff

Connected Wi-Fi/app setup and a three-day cleaning cycle remain; the product page and filed manual differ over which parts may go in a dishwasher, so treat the detachable tray as the only confirmed dishwasher-safe part.

Your needs, this model

Does it fit your priorities?

Do you require selectable humidity control and remote settings, rather than a timer-only device?

The LUH-N451S-WUS manual and current page document local Auto plus VeSync humidity settings and app control.

Does the 4.2 L tank and maker-stated 432 sq ft range meet your minimum?

The current page and manual identify a 4.2 L tank; Levoit states an effective range up to 432 sq ft.

Do you require manufacturer-confirmed dishwasher-safe removable parts?

The current product page confirms the detachable tray; other removable parts have conflicting dishwasher wording in the filed manual, so use the tray-only rule unless Levoit clarifies.

The Levoit NeoClassic 450S is a compact-looking 4.2-liter ultrasonic humidifier with sensor-led Auto, a visible humidity display, VeSync app control and a separate aroma chamber. It makes most sense when those controls matter but you do not want the larger 6.2-liter NeoClassic 650S. The app adds real flexibility; it does not make water changes, cleaning or room placement optional.

One exact current configuration, with a useful identity check

Levoit’s current U.S. product page lists the NeoClassic 450S Smart Humidifier as one default configuration, SKU HEAPHULVSUS0105Y. The U.S. manual filed by its manufacturer, Arovast Corporation, identifies the matching 450S as LUH-N451S-WUS. That distinction matters because Levoit also sells a non-smart NeoClassic 450, and the separate Superior Studio 450S is an evaporative product rather than this ultrasonic model. The 450S reviewed here is the connected, cool-mist NeoClassic.

Its top-fill tank sits over a control base with an RH display. Levoit documents low, medium, high and Auto mist settings, Sleep mode, a timer, a night light, a rotating nozzle and an aroma chamber. Auto uses a humidity sensor; app controls add a user-selected humidity target, schedules, cleaning reminders, scenes that coordinate light, mist and music, and voice control through the listed assistants. A person who only needs a simple on/off setting may find that stack needless. A buyer who wants to adjust a target or see a reading without walking back to the unit has a concrete reason to choose the S model over a manual-only one.

Size claims are useful comparisons, not room guarantees

The listed tank holds 4.2 liters, maximum mist output is 270 mL per hour, and Levoit claims an effective area up to 432 square feet. The manual gives up to 42 hours on Sleep mode, while the product page calls out up to 42 hours of operation; the real interval changes with setting, humidity and room conditions. Levoit advertises quiet operation at 21–26 dB, but that is a manufacturer figure, not an independent measurement made for this review. Its three dimensions are 8.1 × 8.1 × 12.8 inches without labeling the axes, so I would not use the last number as a verified shelf-height cutoff. The 432-square-foot claim is similarly a useful comparison point, not a guarantee that a particular floor plan will humidify evenly.

The Auto display measures conditions at the appliance, not every corner of a room. The manual recommends a flat, water-resistant location at least 12 inches from walls and directs mist away from furniture and bedding. It cautions that a close wall or corner can distort the sensor reading. Leave space around the base intake, keep the outlet away from surfaces, and compare the display with a separate room hygrometer if the reading is important to your decision. A humidifier is not a substitute for a medical device or a nursery monitor.

Connected does not mean low-maintenance

Setup pairs the appliance with VeSync over a secure 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi network; Alexa and Google voice support are part of the manufacturer’s stated compatibility. That is helpful for remote settings, but it creates an account, network and app dependency that a non-smart model avoids. The unit still has local power, mist and Sleep controls if you do not want to open the app for ordinary operation.

Ultrasonic mist can carry dissolved minerals into the room as visible white dust. Levoit recommends purified or distilled water and says tap water can leave mineral dust on surfaces. The included filter sponge is not described as a demineralization cartridge. The manual says to change water daily, clean the tank and base chamber every three days, and empty, clean and dry the appliance before a week or more in storage. Oil belongs only in the designated aroma chamber—not in the water tank or base. The manual’s safety section says not to add treatment liquids or third-party filters.

There is a dishwasher-scope inconsistency worth handling conservatively. The current product page says the detachable tray is dishwasher-safe and specifies that this is the only dishwasher-safe part. The filed manual’s cleaning sequence also names the tank cover, water tank, mist shield and detachable sink as parts that may be put in a dishwasher or washed by hand. Until Levoit clarifies that mismatch, I would limit dishwasher use to the detachable tray and hand-wash the other pieces. The base chamber itself must not go in a dishwasher or be immersed.

Who should choose it—and what else to compare

For the size tradeoff in one place, see the NeoClassic 450S versus 650S comparison.

Choose the 450S when you want a 4.2-liter top-fill ultrasonic model, local controls plus an app-selected humidity target, and a claimed 432-square-foot coverage figure without stepping up to a larger shell. The most meaningful question is not whether the phone screen looks convenient; it is whether you will use Auto, schedules or remote status enough to justify connected setup and still keep the cleaning cadence.

Choose the NeoClassic 650S if longer refill intervals and greater rated output are the priority: its 6.2-liter tank, 320 mL/h output and 536-square-foot manufacturer claim are larger, with a correspondingly taller and heavier product. The Classic 300S is another useful comparison: it has a 6-liter tank and connected automatic controls, but its separate aroma-pad route and cleaning instructions differ. Neither an area figure nor an included filter sponge proves that tap water will be mineral-free or that a target humidity is maintained throughout your home.

Paper, software and setup details

Manufacturer noise claim

Levoit page: 21–26 dB; FCC-filed manual: ≤30 dB, ≤26 dB on low/Sleep

Manufacturer cleaning interval

Change water daily; clean water tank and base chamber every 3 days; empty, clean and dry before storage of a week or longer.

Water and care limits

Use clean, room-temperature water and fill only the tank to its max line. Levoit recommends purified or distilled water; tap water may leave white mineral dust. Never put essential oils, water-treatment liquids or third-party filters in the tank or base; use only the separate aroma chamber for oil. Place on a flat, water-resistant surface at least 12 in from walls, direct mist away from furniture/walls, and do not immerse or dishwash the base chamber. Remove tank before moving.
