A useful fit for

Choose this larger 6.2 L model if its higher published output and reduced refill frequency justify a larger body; app-based Auto and a displayed reading add control but do not verify humidity across a whole open plan.

The main tradeoff

The exact docs disagree: the current product page confines dishwasher use to the detachable tray and says the tank and silencer cover are hand-wash only, while the filed manual lists more parts as dishwasher-or-hand-wash. Use the conservative tray-only rule until Levoit clarifies; daily water changes and every-three-day cleaning remain.

Your needs, this model

Does it fit your priorities?

Do you need at least 5.5 L of top-fill tank capacity and connected Auto control?

The current SKU maps to the LUH-N651S-WUS manual, which specifies a 6.2 L tank and a smart Auto setting.

Does a manufacturer-stated range up to 536 sq ft meet your comparison threshold?

Levoit lists 536 sq ft, while manual troubleshooting separately gives a smaller 505 sq ft figure for an app-reading issue; neither is a room guarantee.

Do you want app-based settings without requiring an included physical remote?

The current product page and exact manual document VeSync app settings, but the stated package contents do not list a physical handset.

The NeoClassic 650S is the large-capacity connected member of Levoit’s current cylindrical ultrasonic line: a 6.2-liter top-fill tank, Auto mode, an on-unit humidity display and VeSync controls. Its chief advantage over the NeoClassic 450S is not a different care philosophy; it is more stored water and higher published output. That size is useful only if the room and refill routine justify a larger appliance.

Confirm the 650S identity before comparing it

The current U.S. Levoit listing has one default variant, SKU HEAPHULVSUS0106Y. The product-specific user manual filed by VeSync (US) Corporation identifies model LUH-N651S-WUS and describes the NeoClassic 650S Smart Ultrasonic Cool Mist Humidifier. This is not the non-smart NeoClassic 650, nor the NeoClassic Max: the Max is a separate current product with different claims, including an antimicrobial-material claim that Levoit specifically says does not protect people from bacteria, viruses or germs. I do not transfer that claim to the 650S.

The 650S uses a removable tank that fills from the top, a 360-degree rotating nozzle, local buttons, a humidity display and three manual mist settings plus Auto. Sleep mode and a night light are also available at the appliance. The VeSync app adds remote settings, a target humidity setting, schedules, cleaning reminders, customized scenes and listed voice-assistant compatibility. Levoit advertises ±5% sensor accuracy and custom scene control; those are maker claims, not measurements performed here. The RH sensor is on the rear of the unit, so the manual’s placement advice matters: keep it on a level, water-resistant surface at least 12 inches from walls, and direct output away from objects that could get wet.

The extra capacity has a specific job

Levoit lists a 6.2-liter tank, maximum output of 320 mL/h, coverage up to 536 square feet and runtime up to 62 hours on Sleep mode. The product page reports no more than 26 dB on low and Sleep; the FCC-filed manual’s specification table instead contains an unfinished “XX dB” placeholder. I therefore treat the sound figure as a current page claim, not a verified manual specification. Runtime is also conditional: the maker says it can be longer or shorter depending on room temperature and humidity, and the manual says a 40–60% relative-humidity range is comfortable. It is not evidence that this tank always runs for two and a half days or raises every large room evenly.

There is a second room-area nuance. The current page gives a 536-square-foot effective-range claim, while the manual’s troubleshooting note for an app reading that does not change says to move to a room smaller than 505 square feet. Those statements are not explained as the same test, so I would not interpret 536 as a promise of accurate sensing everywhere up to that boundary. For a buyer with a smaller bedroom, the NeoClassic 450S may be the less bulky match; for a large open plan, treat both area claims as screening figures and check humidity away from the appliance.

Keep the care routine in the buying decision

Ultrasonic output makes water choice visible. The manual recommends purified or distilled water and warns that tap water can leave white dust from dried minerals. The supplied water-filter sponge is not evidence that the device removes dissolved minerals. Do not add oils, water-treatment liquids or third-party filters to the tank or base; use only the separate aroma chamber for oil. Change the water daily, clean the tank and base chamber every three days, and clean and dry all parts before storage. Keep the base chamber out of water and the dishwasher.

Levoit’s cleaning instructions do not line up perfectly. The live 650S page says the detachable tray is dishwasher-safe but the tank and silencer cover are hand-wash only. The manufacturer's manual filed with the FCC tells owners to place the tank cover, tank, mist shield and detachable sink in a dishwasher or wash them by hand. I would use the narrower current product-page rule—dishwasher only for the detachable tray—and wash the other components by hand until the company clarifies which instruction applies to the current 650S. This is not a reason to skip cleaning; the large tank and removable sink still need regular attention.

When the 650S is the better choice

It suits someone who wants the connected Auto and room-status features but expects to use more output or refill less often than the 4.2-liter 450S allows. Its footprint is 8.8 × 8.8 inches, dimensions are listed as 8.8 × 8.8 × 14.1 inches, and weight is 4.87 pounds. Those figures make it a more substantial item to lift and place; Levoit does not label the axes on the dimension list, so measure the unit and shelf clearance with the retailer or manual before treating 14.1 inches as a guaranteed height.

The 450S keeps the same basic smart-ultrasonic idea in a smaller tank, with 270 mL/h maximum output and a 432-square-foot page claim. The Classic 300S holds 6 liters and also has app-connected Auto, but uses an aroma pad rather than the NeoClassic separate aroma chamber and has its own manual and cleaning routine. Pick by the care path and room placement you can sustain, not by the biggest area label. The 650S cannot provide warm mist, does not eliminate mineral residue, and its app cannot replace daily water changes or the three-day cleaning cycle.

Paper, software and setup details

Manufacturer noise claim

Product page: ≤26 dB on low/Sleep; FCC-filed manual table contains an unfinished “≤XX dB” placeholder.

Manufacturer cleaning interval

Change water daily; clean water tank and base chamber every 3 days; empty, clean and dry before storage of a week or longer.

Water and care limits

Use clean, room-temperature water and fill only the tank to its max line. Levoit recommends purified or distilled water; tap water may leave white mineral dust. Never put essential oils, water-treatment liquids or third-party filters in the tank or base; use only the separate aroma chamber for oil. Place on a flat, water-resistant surface at least 12 in from walls, direct mist away from furniture/walls, and do not immerse or dishwash the base chamber. Remove tank before moving.
