A useful fit for

A household that wants a user-selected humidity target and room-circulating ultrasonic output, is comfortable carrying and inverting a one-gallon tank, and will soak/replace the included MD1-0018 mineral cartridge and clean water-contact parts regularly.

The main tradeoff

The target-controlled Auto plan adds humidity response beyond a simple mist dial, but the UH100 remains bottom-fill and has no documented app or remote. Auto cannot run simultaneously with Continuous High/Low. Vornado claims up to 600 sq ft and rates High output at about two gallons per day only under 70°F/30% RH; neither is a measured guarantee for a particular room. The cartridge and hand-cleaning add ongoing maintenance.

Your needs, this model

Does it fit your priorities?

Do you want the humidifier to work toward a humidity level you choose?

The UH100 Auto plan works toward a selected 40–60% setpoint; Continuous High/Low is a different plan and does not use that setpoint.

Can you remove and invert a one-gallon tank when refilling?

The manual calls for lifting the tank out and turning it over to reach the underside cap; it is not a top-fill reservoir.

Is an ultrasonic whole-room humidifier with a published 600-square-foot upper claim a useful fit screen?

Vornado claims coverage up to 600 sq ft. Room separations, layout and conditions may reduce what reaches the rest of the space.

Do you require an included handheld remote or phone-app operation?

The exact UH100 page and guide list push buttons and LED indicators; they do not document a remote or app, so those capabilities are not confirmed.

Do you need output that can continue without a selected humidity target?

The UH100 manual documents Continuous High/Low as an option, but it disables the target-controlled Auto plan.

The Vornado UH100 is a one-gallon ultrasonic humidifier for someone who wants a selectable humidity target and room-directed circulation, but not a smart-home project. Its useful combination is High, Low or Auto output with a 40–60% target range and a built-in humidistat. The trade-offs start at the sink: the tank must be lifted out and turned over to refill, and mineral management and regular hand-cleaning are part of ownership.

A controllable ultrasonic setup, with two different ways to run it

The UH100 is not just a knob that makes mist stronger or weaker. Its Auto arrangement lets you choose a humidity setting from 40% to 60%; the humidistat reads room conditions, and the machine varies its fan and mist output to work toward the selected level. If you prefer steady output, the separate Continuous setting runs on High or Low. Those are mutually exclusive choices: Auto uses a target, while Continuous disables Auto. That matters if your questionnaire answers say both “hold a chosen humidity” and “run continuously.” One plan cannot deliver both at once.

Vornado describes the unit as using vortex-assisted circulation to distribute humidity around a room, and states coverage up to 600 square feet. Treat that as a manufacturer ceiling, not proof that one unit can humidify a 600-square-foot open plan evenly. Partitions, airflow, ceiling height, outside conditions and the placement of the humidifier all affect what reaches the rest of the space. The manual also says not to aim the mist directly at objects or plants. If you are shopping by area, use this claim as a screening figure rather than a guaranteed result.

Refilling is simple only if turning over a tank is simple for you

The removable tank holds one gallon. To fill it, unplug the humidifier, lift the reservoir by its integrated handle, turn it upside down and remove the cap on its underside. The manual cautions against twisting the tank while it is still seated because the cap can disengage and leak. That is a familiar bottom-fill routine, but it is not a top-fill opening you can pour into while the reservoir stays upright. A full gallon also means a tangible load to carry; compare that handling step with a smaller tank or a design filled from above if wrist strength, grip or sink access is a concern.

The manufacturer rates High output at about two gallons over 24 hours of continuous operation at 70°F and 30% relative humidity. This is a stated test-condition rating, not a promise that every household will use two gallons per day: Auto can pause at its target, and room conditions differ. The machine shuts down when it runs out of water, so a full-day output target still requires checking and refilling the reservoir.

Mineral control and cleaning are part of the decision

Vornado lists an included MD1-0018 mineral cartridge. The owner guide says to soak a new cartridge in water for 24 hours before first use, and gives replacement intervals of about one month for heavy continuous use or two months for lighter intermittent use, with water hardness and other conditions affecting the timing. White residue is a cue to replace it sooner; the troubleshooting section suggests distilled water when hard water continues to leave dust. These are practical recurring steps, not a promise that the cartridge eliminates every mineral deposit.

Cleaning is hands-on. The guide recommends a thorough clean several times through the season, or when deposits, algae or particles appear. The tank and mist path come apart for cleaning; the base must be wiped rather than rinsed or submerged, and the included brush reaches into the water trough. The power head must not be submerged, and the tank and base are not dishwasher-safe. If the machine is left off with standing water, the guide warns that water left in the tank or base for more than eight hours needs attention; it also says to empty the tank after use. This is not a set-and-forget humidifier for a household that will not maintain water-contact surfaces.

Where it fits—and where a different Vornado may make more sense

Choose the UH100 when a 40–60% user-selected target, ultrasonic output, a one-gallon reservoir and the maker’s 600-square-foot maximum claim fit your needs, and you can accept bottom filling and cartridge upkeep. Its control is local push-button operation. The exact product page and guide do not document a remote handset or phone-app control, so neither should be treated as a confirmed feature. They also do not document a warm-mist mode; if heated output is essential, the UH200 is the Vornado model in this library with a separately documented warm-mist option, along with a larger tank and different handling cautions.

If your priority is a reservoir filled from above, compare Vornado’s top-fill MISTIC 4 instead; it gives up the UH100’s selected humidity target. If you want evaporative operation rather than visible ultrasonic mist, the EV3 and EVDC500 are different mechanisms, not interchangeable versions of this machine. These alternatives illustrate the real choice: refill ergonomics, humidity control and humidification method should each be decided from the exact configuration, not inferred from the shared brand name.

Bottom line: The UH100 is a relatively straightforward whole-room ultrasonic model with useful target-based control, but that control does not remove the daily work. It is a better fit for a household willing to invert a full tank, monitor humidity and keep up with mineral-cartridge replacement and cleaning than for someone seeking top-fill convenience, app controls or minimal maintenance.

Paper, software and setup details

Manufacturer cleaning interval

Thoroughly clean several times during the season or when mineral deposits, algae or particles form. Empty the tank after use; if water sits in the off unit for eight hours or more, the manual directs thorough cleaning/disinfection. Wipe the base instead of rinsing/submerging it; do not submerge the power head. Tank and base are not dishwasher-safe.

Water and care limits

The manual calls for soaking a new MD1-0018 mineral cartridge for 24 hours; suggested replacement is about monthly with heavy continuous use or every two months for lighter intermittent use, adjusted for water and conditions. Additives, including aroma fragrances and water conditioners, are prohibited. Troubleshooting suggests distilled water when hard water leaves white dust.
