Your needs, this model
Does it fit your priorities?
Would you prefer pouring water through a top hatch instead of lifting and inverting a tank?
The EV3’s 1.5-gallon reservoir can be filled through its top lid with a pitcher; the manual says not to carry it by the removable lid.
Explore this need in the finder →Do you want invisible evaporative output rather than an ultrasonic mist plume?
The EV3 draws water through two wicks and distributes evaporated moisture with a fan.
Explore this need in the finder →Do 10 fan speeds and a selected 35–60% target or continuous mode fit your control preferences?
The exact guide documents ten speeds, 35–60% target settings, and a continuous mode; a live numeric room-humidity reading is not documented.
Explore this need in the finder →Can you accept hand cleaning rather than requiring dishwasher-safe parts?
The manual says no part is dishwasher-safe; the tank, base and grille require the documented hand-cleaning routine.
Explore this need in the finder →The Vornado EV3 is a current U.S. evaporative humidifier with a useful combination of pour-in-place filling, a 1.5-gallon tank, touch controls and a selectable 35–60% humidity target. Its case is everyday convenience, not a proven 670-square-foot result: Vornado’s room-area, runtime and sound figures are manufacturer claims, and the two wicks still need regular replacement and cleaning. At the time the exact product record was checked, the single listed configuration was marked out of stock.
Refill without lifting the tank
The EV3’s main practical distinction is its top hatch: pour from a pitcher or jug into the 1.5-gallon reservoir without removing the tank, keeping below its fill line. The tank can also be removed; do not carry it by its lid. That differs from the EV100, whose one-gallon tank must be lifted and inverted for filling, and the EVAP40’s four gallons split between two tanks that require more handling.
That 1.5-gallon reservoir is a middle ground, not a refill schedule. Vornado claims up to 54 hours on low; its page gives 2.85 gallons/day in specifications and about 2.8 gallons/day on high in descriptive copy. Those maker figures are not independent tests, and the small discrepancy argues against planning a real-home refill interval from the daily-output number. Fan setting, target and Auto cycling all affect water use.
Evaporative operation and a wide target range
Two treated wicks draw water from the base, and a fan moves air through them. This is evaporative humidification: the product is not an ultrasonic mist maker, and the manual describes invisible water vapor rather than a visible plume. Vornado’s page claims coverage up to 670 square feet, but area is a broad maker rating—not a guarantee that one unit will maintain an even humidity across a multi-room plan, closed doors or a high-ceiling space. Measure the room you need to condition and treat the coverage number as a screening clue, not a house-size promise.
The touch display lets you select a target from 35% to 60% relative humidity or choose continuous operation. In the normal target mode, the EV3 runs at the selected fan speed when the room is at least three points below the target, halves that speed as the room gets within three points, and stops when it reaches three points above. Continuous mode bypasses that cycling. The fan has ten speeds, so there are more steps between a quieter setting and faster circulation than on the EV100’s High/Low buttons or EVAP40’s three-speed dial. The LED display reports the fan setting and humidity setting; it is not a documented live numeric room-humidity readout. Use a separate hygrometer if you need to see the room’s measured relative humidity rather than its target.
Maintenance is part of the deal
The EV3 includes two replaceable wicks. Its manual estimates a typical four-to-eight-week life, depending on use and water conditions, and points to hardness or poor absorption as reasons to replace them. The exact guide calls the wicks MD1-0002. Vornado’s EV3 replacement-parts area names a two-pack MD1-0001; the company’s own MD1-0001 page says that part is the same as MD1-0002 and fits the EV3. That manufacturer cross-reference resolves the different numbers, but check the fit list on a replacement pack rather than buying a wick based only on its dimensions or a third-party compatibility claim.
Vornado recommends a thorough clean several times during the season and whenever mineral deposits, algae or other particles appear. Unplug before removing the power head or filling; no part is dishwasher safe. Empty water after use, and clean and disinfect the appliance if it has been turned off with water in the base for eight hours or longer. The manual tells owners to stop if room humidity exceeds 60%, which is a useful reminder to avoid chasing maximum output without watching the room. There is an instruction conflict: its filling and tips sections prohibit additives such as aroma fragrances and water conditioners, but troubleshooting suggests bacteriostat or water treatment for a hardened wick. I would not add oils or treatment without asking Vornado to clarify; no separate aroma-pad route is documented for this model.
Who should consider it?
Choose the EV3 if you want invisible evaporative output, a reservoir that pours through the top, ten fan steps and a selectable percentage target—and you are willing to clean a water-using appliance and replace two wicks. Consider the EV100 instead if you prefer a smaller one-gallon unit and its 40–60% button-set target is enough, while accepting its invert-to-fill tank. The EVAP40 is the larger-reserve alternative if its two-tank, four-gallon arrangement suits your refill setup and an unnumbered MIN/MAX humidistat is acceptable. For any of the three, maker area claims should not substitute for room measurements or a hygrometer.
The EV3 listing describes a 24-volt DC motor, 14-watt rating, touch control, 7.59-pound weight, and dimensions of 15.15 by 9.24 by 11.10 inches (depth, width, height). The page’s 33 dB low setting and its claim that the DC motor is 70% more efficient than the Evap3 are Vornado comparisons, not measurements made for this review. Vornado lists a five-year satisfaction guarantee; read its terms for the original purchaser. Its current U.S. Shopify record identifies one Default Title option, SKU HU1-0098-06, and was marked out of stock in the archived check. That is a dated availability snapshot, not proof the model has been discontinued.
Model evidence: Vornado’s EV3 U.S. product page, exact EV3 Owner’s Guide, and MD1-0001 wick listing. Coverage, noise, runtime, output and efficiency are maker statements, not independent test results.

Paper, software and setup details
Manufacturer noise claim
Vornado describes a 33 dB low setting; the claim is manufacturer-reported and not independently measured here.
Manufacturer cleaning interval
Thoroughly clean several times during the season and when algae, mineral deposits or other particles appear. Empty water after use; if the appliance is turned off with water in the base for 8 hours or longer, clean and disinfect before next use. Replace wicks approximately every 4–8 weeks as use and water conditions require.
Water and care limits
Unplug before filling, moving or cleaning; do not pour water through the power-head outlet grille; no part is dishwasher-safe. Stop if room RH exceeds 60%. The exact guide contradicts itself: its filling and tips sections prohibit additives including aroma fragrance and water conditioners, while troubleshooting suggests bacteriostat/water treatment for a hardened wick. No additive is recommended pending manufacturer clarification.
