A useful fit for

Choose the Smart 450S when you want Levoit’s tap-water-friendly evaporative approach and a connected way to choose an Auto target, check humidity, schedule use and receive wick-cleaning reminders.

The main tradeoff

VeSync features require an account and secure 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi, but the wick, tank and water path still need regular hands-on cleaning. Its larger-room figure and output are manufacturer claims, not independent in-room results.

Your needs, this model

Does it fit your priorities?

Do you need a selectable Auto target in a connected, wick-fed evaporative humidifier?

The LEH-S451S-WUS manual describes app-set targets from 30% to 80% in VeSync; local Auto defaults to 50%.

Do you want the same evaporative water path with top filling and no visible spray?

The linked manual identifies an evaporative wick and top-grille filling; both current finish SKUs share this model manual.

Can a 4.5 L tank and a published 600 sq ft coverage figure satisfy your comparison threshold?

Levoit lists a 4.5-liter tank and up to 600 square feet; the area figure is a maker claim, not a room-specific result.

The Levoit Superior Studio Smart keeps the Studio 450’s evaporative wick, 4.5-liter top-fill tank, and invisible output, then adds a useful difference: VeSync can display readings, schedule operation, send cleaning reminders, and let you choose an Auto target. That matters if a fixed 50% preset is too blunt for your routine. It does not remove wick care or add warm mist.

Two finish variants share one smart model

Levoit’s current U.S. page lists two finishes: White Blue, SKU HEAPHULVSUS0104Y, and White, SKU HEAPHULVSUS0109Y. Its variant record maps both to one page and the linked U.S. manual identifies LEH-S451S-WUS, so this assessment treats them as finish variants of the same operating model. Levoit does not label its gallery images as photographs or product renderings.

There is also a non-smart Studio 450 with essentially the same tank, output, Auto, Dry and descaling modes, wick, dimensions, and area claim. VeSync adds remote on/off, fan settings, a selectable Auto target, Dry and Sleep controls, humidity monitoring, 1–24-hour timers, reminders, and Alexa or Google Home voice control. Setup needs a VeSync account and secure 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi; the plain Studio 450 avoids that network setup.

Auto, target, and sensor placement are not interchangeable

Both models use a humidity sensor for Auto and default to a 50% target when not connected to VeSync. The Smart manual says its app can set an Auto target from 30% to 80%. That turns a broad preference into a selectable control, but it is not proof that every room will stabilize at the displayed percentage: the sensor is on the unit, and the manual warns against placing it within 12 inches of a wall or in a corner, where its reading may not represent the room. The maker recommends 40–60% relative humidity and warns against operation above 60% unless a plant or furnishing requires it. Keep a separate room reading if you need to judge conditions away from the appliance.

Sleep mode lowers fan speed and turns off the display; the Smart manual says its Sleep target is 50% by default, with the target adjustable in the app. Dry Mode runs low, medium, or high to dry the wick; automatic drying can run when the tank empties, when the appliance is turned off, and after a descaling cycle, with an app switch for automatic mode. Levoit’s page calls the acid-assisted maintenance cycle “Self Cleaning,” but the manual labels it Descaling Mode: you add citric acid and water and start the cycle. It loosens scale; it is not unattended sanitizing or a substitute for taking the unit apart and cleaning it.

What the numbers do—and do not—promise

Levoit lists a 4.5-liter tank, up to 40 ±10% hours on low fan speed, up to 600 square feet of coverage, and a maximum output of 400 mL/h ±15%. The manual gives a 12-watt rating, 19–45 dB measured at 1.5 meters, and a 6.1-pound appliance weight. The published dimensions are 9.1 × 9.1 × 15.8 inches without labeled axes, so the final number should not be silently converted into a verified height for a shelf-fit requirement. Levoit’s output field is worded as “Max Mist Output,” but this is an evaporative unit: the manufacturer says its moisture leaves as invisible vapor rather than a visible spray. The largest room-area figure is a claim, not independent whole-room validation; temperature, starting humidity, ventilation, and actual use affect runtime and perceived output.

The wet wick is the reason this model can use tap water without dispersing visible mineral dust in the way an ultrasonic mist can. Minerals remain part of the filter and water-path cleaning job, however. The product page describes antimicrobial material on water-contact parts to help inhibit mold growth; Levoit cautions that this does not protect users against bacteria, viruses, germs, or disease organisms. Do not read the claim as eliminating cleaning. The manual says not to add essential oils. There is no heated warm mist, no rotating mist nozzle, and no separately documented handheld remote.

Budget time for the wick, not just the refill

Water is poured through the grille to the marked level, after switching the appliance off. Levoit directs owners to change water every three days and clean the tank every three days; clean the wick every two weeks and after humidifying when ready. The wick can be washed with detergent or citric acid, rinsed thoroughly, and may be machine-washed. The “up to two years” filter claim is based on one wash per week, so it is a conditional lifespan, not a promise that a filter never needs replacement. The wick frame, support frame, and water tank may go in the dishwasher, but the humidifier top and pump assembly must stay out. Follow the manual for disassembly, complete drying, and citric-acid descaling. The package lists a pre-installed wick, adapter, cleaning brush, citric acid, manual, and quick-start guide.

Pick the Smart 450S if a connected adjustable target, schedule, or remote status is useful enough to justify app and Wi-Fi setup, and you are willing to keep the filter routine. Choose the plain Superior Studio 450 if its fixed on-device Auto target and display are enough. If you want app control but would rather avoid a wick, compare the Classic 300S; it is ultrasonic and has a different water-care tradeoff. Neither Superior Studio replaces a heated warm-mist humidifier, and neither makes a confirmed under-shelf height claim from Levoit’s unlabeled dimensions.

Paper, software and setup details

Manufacturer noise claim

19–45 dB; manufacturer test stated at 1.5 m from the humidifier.

Manufacturer cleaning interval

Change water and clean tank every 3 days; clean wick filter every 2 weeks and after humidifying when ready; clean and dry before a week or longer in storage.

Water and care limits

Use the top grille and stay between MAX and MIN. Place on a level, water-resistant surface at least 12 in from walls so the rear humidity sensor can function. Wash the wick with laundry detergent or citric acid and rinse thoroughly; the manual permits washing-machine care. The wick frame, support frame and tank may be placed in a dishwasher; never put the top or pump assembly in one. Dry Mode assists drying; Descaling Mode uses citric acid and is not a substitute for regular cleaning. Do not add essential oils. Follow the manual and avoid running above 60% RH unless required for a plant or furnishing.
