A useful fit for

A practical fit for someone who wants a manageable 4 L top-fill format, a local numeric display and app-connected cool-mist control, and who will follow the frequent water-change and cleaning routine. The selectable 30-90% target and separate aroma pad are more useful distinctions than the retailer's unqualified maximum runtime claim.

The main tradeoff

The HM420S is cool-mist only, so it cannot provide warm mist. Runtime and room-area claims are not manual-backed guarantees, while the manual calls for cleaning every three days and monthly descaling. Keep DR-HHM010S / 120 V visible: the combined support family also contains other model codes and other-market versions.

Your needs, this model

Does it fit your priorities?

Do you want a 4 L reservoir that fills from above, without lifting and inverting the whole tank?

The exact DR-HHM010S manual identifies a 4 L tank and illustrates filling from the top; a top-fill listing also names this exact model.

Will you actually use app access and a selectable target humidity, rather than just choosing a mist level?

The manual documents Dreo app pairing and an Auto target adjustable from 30% to 90% in five-point steps, alongside three manual levels.

Do you require ultrasonic mist rather than wick-fed evaporative humidification?

The North American manual and U.S. listing identify the reviewed HM420S as an ultrasonic cool-mist unit; it is not a wick-fed evaporative design.

The Dreo HM420S is a four-liter, top-fill ultrasonic cool-mist humidifier with app control, three manual mist levels and a selectable Auto humidity target. It is a sensible fit when those controls matter more than a larger tank or warm mist. The U.S. configuration reviewed here is the 120-volt DR-HHM010S; keep that exact model code attached to an offer even when related 320/420 names appear.

Keep the U.S. model number with the product name

The Dreo-authored North American manual calls the unit HM420S on its cover and DR-HHM010S in the specifications. A Dreo-sold U.S. listing identifies that same model code in White. Its four-liter tank, 120 V / 60 Hz input and 28 W rating are also printed in the manual. When comparing a used or marketplace listing, match both the model code and the power specification on the manual or rating label for the U.S. unit.

Model names and codes around this family can be confusing, so exact identity matters. Hesung Innovation’s model letter filed for FCC ID 2A3SYHHM010 lists DR-HHM010S, DWHM10S and DTHM01S and says their electrical circuit design, layout, components and internal wiring are identical, with color as the only difference. The Dreo-authored DWHM10S manual is named HM320S, while the reviewed North American manual calls DR-HHM010S HM420S. That establishes closely related hardware—not a blanket match to every retailer offer, color or package. This review and its U.S. shopping identity stay anchored to the verified White DR-HHM010S listing; standard DWHM10 and other market-specific offers remain outside its scope.

Auto is a selectable target, not a room guarantee

The manual documents Low, Medium and High mist levels on the control panel, plus Auto mode. In Auto, the target can be adjusted from 30% to 90% relative humidity in five-point steps, and the mist level responds to the chosen target. The round display shows a humidity value and status icons; it is more informative than a simple output dial, but the maker does not promise that one sensor reading represents every corner of a room. Give the unit space, monitor the actual room and turn the output down if nearby surfaces begin to feel damp.

The Dreo app can connect the humidifier after Bluetooth setup. The manual describes using a Dreo account for voice-assistant access. If you do not want to set up an app or account, the on-device buttons still provide three manual levels, but the configurable Auto target and connected controls are a reason to choose this model over a simpler humidifier. The manual shows a timer indicator, and the Dreo-sold retailer listing marks a timer feature; I could not establish a timer duration or local setting sequence from the manual, so do not buy it for a specific timer schedule without checking the instructions for your unit.

Four liters helps, but it does not remove refill work

The top-fill layout avoids turning over a full tank to pour water in. Dreo’s U.S. retail listing advertises up to 36 hours, 28 dB and a 40-inch mist reach. Those are listing claims, not independent measurements or a setting-specific runtime promise. The same page distinguishes a 40-inch plume/reach from the body dimensions: it lists the appliance at about 9.76 inches high, 6.34 wide and 11.69 deep. A 300-square-foot maximum room-size figure also appears in the listing, but the manual does not provide a room-sizing method, so treat it as a rough seller-published limit rather than an assurance for a closed bedroom or a particular climate.

Ultrasonic cool mist is the key tradeoff. There is no warm-mist setting. Water minerals may leave visible residue, so the manual recommends purified or distilled water to limit that issue. Dreo also depicts a demineralization cartridge, but do not mistake that cartridge for a water-treatment guarantee. The manual directs fragrance oil to the separate aroma pad and explicitly says not to put oil in the tank or elsewhere in the appliance.

Be realistic about the cleaning cadence

The manual warns that water should be renewed and the tank cleaned at least every three days; it also recommends monthly descaling and weekly cleaning of the aroma-pad tray. That schedule matters more than the phrase “easy to fill.” The tank comes away from the base for rinsing, while the base contains electrical components and must not be immersed. The manual asks for a firm, level placement 60 cm above the floor and 30 cm from a wall or wooden furniture. That may rule out a low floor-level location or a tight bedside shelf even though the body is compact.

Who should choose the HM420S?

Choose the HM420S if you want a four-liter top-fill cool-mist unit, a visible numeric display and an app-linked humidity target, and you are comfortable refreshing water and cleaning on the maker’s schedule. The separate aroma pad is an optional route, not a reason to use tank water as a diffuser. If your essential requirement is warm mist, this model cannot meet it; compare a reviewed warm-mist configuration such as the Dreo HM713S instead. If fewer refills matter more than this smaller body, the Dreo HM524S has a larger six-liter tank, but it is a different product and still requires careful cleaning.

The HM420S is not the right answer if you need a confirmed room-wide humidity guarantee, a specific low-setting runtime, a verified local timer range, warm mist or a maintenance-free reservoir. Those limits are more decision-useful than treating “smart” or “up to 36 hours” as a promise. Follow the manual that matches DR-HHM010S and verify the model and voltage on any used or third-party offer.
