A useful fit for

For someone who prefers cool mist, wants a 6-liter tank and a selectable humidity target, and can follow monthly descaling.

The main tradeoff

Must remain distinct from the standard HM524. Advertised runtime and area are maker claims; page/manual power figures disagree.

Your needs, this model

Does it fit your priorities?

Would a 6-liter tank plus selectable Auto target fit your routine?

Manual identifies 6 L and target range 30–80% in 5-point steps.

Do you need warm mist or is cool-only the right mode?

HM524S is cool-only; the separate HM713S adds warm mist.

The Dreo HM524S is a 6-liter, top-fill ultrasonic cool-mist humidifier with app and voice control, a selectable Auto humidity target, and a broad 360-degree outlet. It makes sense when you want the cool-mist branch of Dreo’s smart line with more tank volume than the HM512S. Do not confuse it with the separate, non-smart HM524: the similar name and shared current collection are not proof that the standard model has the HM524S controls.

Keep the model suffix visible

Dreo’s US collection lists “Humidifier 524 6L” and “Smart Humidifier 524S 6L” as separate product rows. This review covers the smart page and its exact DR-HHM004S manual only. The current smart page lists black, white, blue and grey variants; Dreo’s product record assigns separate finish SKUs within the same HM524S family. The documented controls are shared across the smart variants; nothing in the page or manual indicates a capacity or mist-mechanism difference by finish. If you are comparing a marketplace listing, look for HM524S on the device or manual rather than accepting “524” as a shorthand.

The tank is 6 liters and the page describes a 500-square-foot area claim, a 28 dB noise claim, 26 W and a body measuring 5.91 inches deep by 11.42 wide by 12.4 high. The page’s advertised runtime is up to 60 hours, but a maximum is not the expected interval between fills at a chosen setting. Output, ambient dryness and ventilation change water use. Treat all of those numbers as maker claims, not independent measurements.

Set a humidity target instead of guessing at the dial

The exact DR-HHM004S manual describes Auto Mode and a target range of 30–80% relative humidity in five-point increments. It also explains the indicator-light bands, low/medium/high manual levels and a built-in timer. That gives the HM524S a useful control role: you can set a target, see the reading and let the humidifier adjust rather than leave a mist level running without a stopping point. Dreo’s separate web copy describes humidity regulation within ±5%; that is a maker precision claim, not a room-wide guarantee. Place the unit so the outlet does not blow directly toward the sensor or a wall.

The nozzle turns through 360 degrees. Dreo advertises a 40-inch mist height and four-inch wide plume; these are presentation claims, not a promise that a particular room will humidify evenly. Leave space around the body for the cover, fill access and mist path. For an area threshold, this review uses only the maker’s current 500-square-foot rating where a value is offered; it still should not replace room-specific monitoring.

More water still means a water routine

Top-fill reduces the awkward lift-and-invert step: lift off the cover and fill the reservoir from above. The manual shows a removable tank, mist tube, float and aroma tray, and calls for monthly descaling. It recommends purified or distilled water to limit mineral deposits; hard water can mean more visible residue and a shorter interval before cleaning is needed. The main base contains electrical parts and is not an item to soak. Use the documented separation and dry-down steps rather than relying on the phrase “modular design” as a substitute for reading the cleaning instructions.

The fragrance route is a separate pad. Add oil only to the aroma pad, not directly to the reservoir. Dreo says the scent can be subtle. This is a secondary feature, not a reason to buy the unit as a scent diffuser. If your priority is warm mist, the HM524S does not provide it; look instead at the HM713S and weigh its warmer operation and manual-specific restrictions.

When the 6-liter cool-mist plan fits

Choose the HM524S if a 6-liter tank, top-fill access, configurable humidity target, app connection and cool mist match the way you plan to use it. Its strongest contrast with the 5-liter HM512S is extra nominal tank volume and a different display/body design, not an evaporative mechanism or a promise of less cleaning. Compare the HM713S only if warm mist matters; the HM713S is a different dual-temperature appliance, not a small variation of this one. Compare the HM311S if you value the smaller 4-liter format, but keep its automation evidence caveat in mind.

This is not a blanket “large-room” answer for every house. Dreo’s area claim is a starting figure, the tank must still be cleaned, and relative humidity should be monitored in the actual room. If you need a guaranteed setpoint, a washable filter, visible room-wide performance data or a verified care cadence different from monthly descaling, the page and manual do not establish that benefit.

Paper, software and setup details

Manufacturer noise claim

Dreo lists 28 dB; not independently measured.

Manufacturer cleaning interval

Monthly descaling, per DR-HHM004S manual.

Water and care limits

Manual distinguishes tank, base, float, mist tube and aroma pad. Do not put oil in tank water. Dreo recommends purified/distilled water to limit mineral residue.
