Honeywell ultrasonic cool-mist comparisons

Honeywell HUL545 vs HUL525: One gallon or half?

The Honeywell HUL525 Mini Mist and HUL545 Ultra Comfort use the same HUL525/HUL545 manual family, but the choice is not just a color or name difference. HUL545 holds one gallon across its tank and reservoir; HUL525 holds one-half gallon. Both still require a bottom-fill routine, a manual output knob and weekly hands-on cleaning.

Choose the tank scale you can comfortably handle

The HUL525 is the smaller option when you would rather carry less water at each refill. The shared Honeywell manual distinguishes its half-gallon capacity from the HUL545 one-gallon configuration. It says that capacity includes the tank and the base reservoir together, so do not read those numbers as a promise that every ounce is held in the removable tank alone. A larger HUL545 fill may reduce refill frequency, but the benefit depends on output and room conditions; the official page’s up-to-36-hour claim does not name a setting. The licensed store assigns that maximum to low, which is still an estimate, not a guaranteed runtime.

The larger fill has a handling cost. For either model, turn the unit off, lift the tank, invert it, remove the cap and fill with cool water. The shared manual says to carry the tank with two hands and keep a hand under its base. If you want fewer refills but dislike carrying a heavier tank, the HUL545 is not automatically the more convenient option; a top-fill layout such as Honeywell’s HUL585 changes how water is added, though not the need to clean removable parts.

Shared controls and mist direction

Both models make visible cool mist with ultrasonic operation and a manual knob. Their outlet turns 90 degrees from the front to help direct output away from the rear air intake. They are not humidistats: the manual recommends a separate humidity monitor and lowering the output when the room is comfortable. Neither the HUL525/HUL545 manual nor their product-page controls document a selectable humidity target, app, remote or timer. An empty-tank shutdown is not automatic humidity management.

Both also have a dedicated aroma tray and pad. The oil evaporates separately from the water path, so this is not a water-based diffuser. Do not put essential oils, inhalants or other additives in the tank or outlet. If a separate, manufacturer-documented aroma route matters, either model fits that need; it does not distinguish the two.

Care and room-size limits

Honeywell describes the HUL545 for a medium room and the HUL525 for a small room, but neither model page supplies a square-foot figure. A room-size label is not a usable numeric limit if your room needs a specific area rating. Both are filter-free, not maintenance-free. The shared manual calls for fresh water each day and weekly cleaning, separates descaling from disinfecting, and warns not to immerse the base. It lists a fragile nebulizer that needs gentle handling. Hard water can leave mineral residue; Honeywell suggests distilled water or the model-compatible PDC51V2 cartridge. Check the cartridge package and availability rather than assuming it is included.

One current-spec caveat is particular to the HUL545: the official page and licensed-store listing disagree about listed height, and the official page’s three-year limited warranty differs from the shared manual/store two-year terms. Keep height unknown for a strict fit test and verify applicable warranty terms in the exact purchase documents.

A practical choice

Choose the HUL525 if a half-gallon scale is enough and a smaller amount to carry matters more than stretching refills. Choose HUL545 if you want the one-gallon capacity and can manage a larger inverted tank. Neither belongs on a shortlist that requires top-fill, a documented sensor-controlled target, a precise area rating or dishwasher-safe cleaning. The questionnaire should distinguish them through capacity and refill preferences, not imply that the larger tank adds an automatic humidity feature.

Read the HUL525 assessment for its smaller fill scale and Mini Mist limitations, or read the HUL545 assessment for capacity and source conflicts. To avoid turning a tank over, compare the top-fill HUL585; to compare a more automated evaporative plan, see the HEV615 humidistat.

Put the room and upkeep together.
