A useful fit for

For someone who wants a compact dial-operated ultrasonic humidifier, a direction-adjustable mist outlet and a separate oil pad, and accepts daily water changes and weekly cleaning.

The main tradeoff

The tank must be lifted and inverted to fill. It is not top-fill or humidity-controlled. Coverage is not quantified, while its dimensions and warranty statements conflict across maker/store sources.

Your needs, this model

Does it fit your priorities?

Do you require a separate manufacturer-designated aroma pad?

Yes. The HUL525 manual documents the passive tray/pad and prohibits oil or inhalant in its tank or outlet; this is not a water diffuser.

Would a directional mist outlet materially affect placement?

The HUL525/HUL545 manual says the outlet rotates 90 degrees from the front. It does not remove the need to keep mist away from walls and furnishings.

Do you need a top-fill tank or sensor-controlled humidity target?

No. This is a bottom-fill manual-dial model. Low-water shutdown is not humidity control, and the manual documents no selected RH target.

Honeywell’s HUL525 Mini Mist is a half-gallon ultrasonic cool-mist humidifier for a desk, nightstand or other small space. It combines a manual output knob with two features the neighboring HUL520 MistMate does not document: a directional mist outlet and a separate essential-oil pad. Its tank still has to be removed and inverted for filling, and the pad is a passive aroma route—not a water-tank additive or a humidity-control feature.

Same small tank scale, with a more aimable outlet

The HUL525 makes visible cool mist with an ultrasonic nebulizer and a fan. The current Honeywell page lists a 0.5-gallon tank (1.9 liters), “small” room size and up to 24 hours per fill. A Honeywell-licensed store page attaches the 24-hour claim to the lowest setting, but no runtime is guaranteed in a particular room. The modest capacity is easier to manage than a large reservoir, yet it also means a high-output setting or long run can bring refills sooner. Honeywell gives no exact square-foot coverage figure; use “small room” as a maker label, not as a quantified performance promise.

This is not a top-fill humidifier. To fill it, the manual says to switch it off, lift the tank, turn it over, remove the cap and add cool water. The tank and reservoir together hold 0.5 gallon / 1.9 liters. The wide opening helps with hand access; check the cap gasket before returning the tank.

The mist outlet is directional and rotates 90 degrees to either side of the front. That gives more control over where visible mist travels and helps keep it away from the rear air intake. It is still important to aim the output away from walls, furniture and bedding. A nozzle that can turn is not a humidistat: it changes direction, not how the appliance reads room humidity.

Aroma pad is a separate, limited feature

The HUL525 has a small tray with a pad for a few drops of essential oil. Honeywell explicitly says this is not a diffuser: oil does not touch the humidifier water and passively evaporates from the pad. The manual warns against putting essential oils, liquid inhalants or other additives in the tank and against pouring any liquid into the mist outlet. If a separate aroma pad is essential, the HUL525 meets that documented setup. The HUL520 has no documented pad, but that does not confirm a no-oil route; neither model satisfies that essential requirement. Neither pad nor oil should be confused with a room-humidity sensor.

Simple output control, no selected target

A rotary knob turns the humidifier on and adjusts mist output. The HUL525 shuts off when water is low or the tank is removed, but the manual does not describe automatic cycling to a chosen humidity level. Honeywell suggests a separate humidity monitor and lowering the knob once the room feels comfortable. There is no documented numeric display, selectable humidistat target, app, remote or built-in timer. In the finder, dial control and manual output fit; a requirement for automatic humidity response or a percentage target should exclude this model.

Care is specific to the ultrasonic reservoir

The HUL525 manual recommends fresh clean water every day and weekly cleaning. Scale removal and disinfecting are separate steps; unplug and empty the tank and base first, then follow the manual’s separate solutions and rinse thoroughly. The nebulizer is fragile, so use the supplied brush gently. Do not submerge the base, direct rinse water at the control knob or put humidifier parts in a dishwasher. The tray should be wiped separately, and the oil pad must never go into the water reservoir. In hard-water areas, the manual says distilled water or the compatible Protec PDC51V2 demineralization cartridge can help reduce white dust. Cartridge availability was not checked.

The manual calls for a stable, water-resistant surface at least 12 inches from the wall and three feet from the bedside. Direct output away from bedding and furniture, and lower or stop output if condensation appears. The automatic stop prevents operation at low water; it does not replace emptying, refreshing water or regular cleaning.

Who should choose it, and what would change that?

The HUL525 is a match for someone seeking a compact, visible-mist unit with a physical dial, no wick changes, directional output and an optional passive aroma pad. Its black, white and red finish versions are listed on Honeywell’s current product page; the licensed store identifies the black retail item as HUL525BV2, with white HUL525W and red HUL525R variants. These are finish listings, not three different control plans. The images in this review identify the exact black HUL525 variant shown by the licensed store; the image source does not say whether it is a photograph or a render.

If your priorities are a rotary dial and half-gallon reservoir but you do not need the aroma pad or the rotating outlet, Honeywell’s HUL520 is the simpler neighboring plan. Its current product page gives a different maximum-runtime claim and does not document an oil tray. If top-fill is essential, the HUL525 does not meet that requirement. If you want more than manual output adjustment, compare a humidistat model such as Honeywell’s HEV615 or an app-enabled ultrasonic product; those alternatives add their own wick or connected-care tradeoffs. No room-area requirement can be judged from “small” alone, and an essential numeric coverage minimum must stay unknown rather than be guessed.

Exact-model note

The Honeywell HUL525 page lists model SKU HUL525B/W/R; its shared HUL525/HUL545 manual distinguishes the half-gallon HUL525 from the one-gallon HUL545. The manufacturer page’s height/width dimensions do not match the licensed-store L×W×H listing, so this review does not use a numeric height. The HUL525 page lists a three-year warranty, while the older shared manual and licensed-store listing state two years; check the written terms for a specific unit. The claims here are documentation-based, not personal testing, a measured sound result, a sale price or a summary of customer reviews.

Paper, software and setup details

Manufacturer cleaning interval

Fresh clean water daily; weekly hand cleaning.

Water and care limits

Manual requires daily fresh water and weekly cleaning. Descale and disinfect in separate procedures, rinse thoroughly and gently brush fragile nebulizer. No dishwasher or base submersion. Distilled water or compatible Protec PDC51V2 is suggested for hard-water white dust. Oils go only on the separate pad; do not add to water tank or outlet.
