A useful fit for

For someone who wants visible ultrasonic cool mist, two top-fill options, a physical output dial and no wick replacements, and is willing to monitor humidity separately and clean the reservoir weekly.

The main tradeoff

The HUL585 does not sense room humidity or run to a selected target; it has no display, timer, app, remote or warm-mist mode. Mineral residue and weekly nebulizer care remain part of filter-free ownership.

Your needs, this model

Does it fit your priorities?

Do you want top-fill ultrasonic cool mist with a manual output knob?

Yes. The HUL585 can be filled with a pitcher at the unit or at a sink, and its HUL585-specific manual section uses a power/output knob.

Explore this need in the finder →
Do you require sensor-based humidity response or an automatic humidity target?

No. The HUL585 instructions use a manual output knob and a separate humidity monitor; the shared manual assigns automatic setpoint cycling and its reached-status icon to HUL588, not HUL585.

Explore this need in the finder →
Do you want the separate aroma-pad route rather than putting oil in the water?

The manual documents an oil pad/tray that does not contact the water; it forbids adding oils or inhalants to the tank, base, reservoir or outlet.

The Honeywell HUL585 is a top-fill ultrasonic model for someone who wants visible cool mist, a hands-on output dial and no wick-filter replacement schedule. Its 1.25-gallon tank can be filled with a pitcher at the unit or carried to a sink. The key trade is manual control: the HUL585 does not let you choose a humidity setpoint or cycle itself to one.

Two fill paths and a simple dial

The HUL585 sends water from its tank into a reservoir, where an ultrasonic nebulizer makes visible mist. Its broad top opening lets you pour water in place, while a handle lets you remove the tank for sink filling. At 1.25 gallons (4.7 liters) with the reservoir, a full tank is a sizable carry.

A rotary power/output control is the main operating interface. Turn it up when more output is wanted, then reduce it as the room becomes comfortable. The manual suggests checking humidity with a separate monitor; the HUL585 does not show a numeric room reading or offer a selectable humidistat target. The licensed-store FAQ mentions a reached-humidity light, but the manual documents it for HUL588 only; treat it as unconfirmed on HUL585. Its automatic shutoff when water is low is a safety/empty-tank feature, not automatic humidity regulation. If your must-have is a model that stops and restarts around a chosen relative-humidity level, this is the wrong control plan.

Honeywell says up to 36 hours per fill; its licensed store ties that estimate to low. Higher output uses more water, so do not treat it as a guaranteed interval. The maker calls it suitable for a medium room but does not give a confirmed square-foot figure on the reviewed product page. Do not turn “medium” into a precise coverage promise. Conflicting dimension figures across Honeywell’s own listings are another reason to measure the actual place where the humidifier will sit rather than rely on a single size number.

Visible mist changes water and placement decisions

The two-way outlet lets you aim the mist in different directions. That is useful when the unit has an open place on a dresser or table, but the mist should be directed away from walls, furniture, bedding and electronics. Honeywell’s manual calls for a firm, level, water-resistant surface, at least 12 inches of wall clearance and placement at least four feet from a bedside. Ultrasonic output is visible, unlike the invisible moisture from a wick-and-fan evaporative model. With mineral-heavy tap water, the manual warns that minerals may leave white residue; distilled water or the compatible HDC500 demineralization cartridge is its documented mitigation path. The cartridge is an optional consumable, not a required wick filter, and its current retail availability was not established here.

There is a separate essential-oil pad and tray. The manual describes passive evaporation from that pad and explicitly warns against adding oils, inhalants or other additives to the tank, base, reservoir or mist outlet. Think of it as a small separate aroma route, not an oil diffuser or a reason to treat the water. The product does not provide app control, remote operation, a built-in timer or warm mist.

Cleaning is routine, not optional

Honeywell recommends weekly cleaning. The manual separates scale removal from disinfecting: unplug the unit, empty the tank and base, clean the nebulizer and reservoir as directed, and rinse each process thoroughly before using the humidifier again. The float paddle must be correctly seated; the manual warns that incorrect placement can prevent water feed or cause leakage. Do not submerge the electrical base. A filter-free design saves wick changes, but it does not make mineral cleaning disappear. In a hard-water home, plan for more frequent attention if scale builds up quickly and follow the manual rather than scraping the nebulizer.

The unit automatically stops when its water level is low or the tank is removed. That is helpful if the humidifier runs dry, but the owner still needs to empty and refresh standing water and keep up with weekly care.

Which model fits the way you use it?

Choose the HUL585 if you prefer a physical dial, want the option of filling at the unit, and accept visible ultrasonic mist plus regular reservoir cleaning. In a finder, selecting top-fill, ultrasonic operation, dial controls and the aroma-pad route fits this configuration. Selecting automatic humidity response, a numeric target or an appliance timer should remove it from the shortlist. The tank-capacity answer may also matter if you have a minimum refill scale in mind; no exact room-area requirement should be inferred from the “medium” label.

For automatic humidity cycling and a numeric setting, Honeywell’s HEV620 is a different kind of machine: a taller evaporative tower with a 1.7-gallon tank, humidity display, selected target and timer, but a replaceable wick. The HEV615 keeps the evaporative, top-fill and wick routine while simplifying the humidity control to a setting/status indicator. For a smaller top-fill ultrasonic option with a dial, Levoit’s Classic 160 uses a 2.5-liter tank and has a different care and oil-route profile. Those alternatives do not make the HUL585 inferior; they show the real choice between a simple visible-mist dial, evaporative automatic control and a smaller top-fill plan.

Exact model and limitations

The current black retail variant is listed by the licensed Honeywell store as HUL585B (UPC 0328785008241); Honeywell’s product/support pages use HUL585, and the shared HUL585/HUL588 manual distinguishes the HUL585 knob from the HUL588 electronic controls. The image here is the black HUL585B catalog image, not a picture of the electronic HUL588 variant. No hands-on, noise, humidity-output, durability or room-coverage measurements are claimed. The review relies on the exact model page and manual; stock and product claims can change. Follow the manual for the precise fill, placement, water and care routine.

Paper, software and setup details

Manufacturer cleaning interval

Fresh clean water daily; weekly cleaning recommended; dry completely before seasonal storage.

Water and care limits

The HUL585/HUL588 manual requires separate scale removal and disinfecting processes, thorough rinsing, careful hand cleaning of the fragile nebulizer, and correct float-paddle placement. Do not submerge the base. In hard-water areas the manual suggests distilled water or optional HDC500; current accessory availability was not verified. Oils are permitted only on the separate pad, never in the tank, base, reservoir or mist outlet.
