A useful fit for

For someone who wants a one-gallon water capacity, manual mist adjustment, a rotating outlet and separate aroma pad, and can lift and invert the tank for refilling and follow the daily/weekly care routine.

The main tradeoff

The larger capacity is not top-fill or automatic humidity control. The room label is not a square-foot rating; runtime is a claim rather than a guarantee. Listed height and warranty duration conflict across official and licensed-store sources.

Your needs, this model

Does it fit your priorities?

Would a one-gallon water capacity reduce refill friction enough to justify a heavier inverted tank?

The HUL545 manual specifies 3.8 L across tank and base reservoir together, twice the HUL525's 1.9 L. The manual still requires lifting and inverting the tank and recommends carrying it with two hands.

Do you need a separately documented aroma pad and an outlet you can turn toward a safer placement?

The HUL545/HUL525 manual documents a passive aroma pad and an outlet that rotates 90 degrees from the front; oils must stay out of the tank and outlet.

Is a manual dial acceptable, or do you need automatic humidity sensing or top fill?

The HUL545 is bottom-fill with manual output control and no documented selected RH target. If either top fill or sensor-based response is essential, choose a different operating plan.

Honeywell’s HUL545 Ultra Comfort is a one-gallon ultrasonic cool-mist model that keeps the bottom-fill, manual-dial routine of the smaller HUL525 Mini Mist while roughly doubling its water capacity. It also has a direction-adjustable outlet and a separate aroma pad. The larger reservoir can mean fewer trips to the sink, but it is still a tank you remove, invert and carry—not a top-fill design or an automatic humidistat.

The useful difference is capacity, not automation

The HUL545 uses an ultrasonic nebulizer to make visible cool mist. Honeywell describes a medium-room target and says the unit can run for up to 36 hours per filling, but its model page gives no square-foot rating and does not attach that maximum to a setting. The Honeywell-licensed store specifies up to 36 hours on low. Treat that as a maker/store estimate rather than a promise: the output setting, room conditions and the humidity level you are trying to maintain all affect how long a fill lasts.

The HUL545 and the smaller HUL525 share an owner manual, but they are not the same capacity configuration. The manual specifies one gallon (3.8 L) for the HUL545 and one-half gallon (1.9 L) for the HUL525, counting the tank and base reservoir together. That makes the HUL545 the more sensible of the two if a smaller refill scale is a recurring annoyance. It does not establish how quickly either model will raise humidity in a particular room. “Medium” is a manufacturer label, not a measured coverage figure.

Plan for an inverted tank

This is not top-fill. To refill, Honeywell instructs you to switch the unit off, lift the water tank from the base, turn it upside down, unscrew the cap and add cool water. Check that the cap gasket is seated before turning the tank upright and replacing it. The manual says to carry the tank with two hands, supporting its bottom as well as holding the handle. A full one-gallon tank may be a poor match if lifting, turning or carrying a filled vessel is difficult. A top-fill model such as the HUL585 changes that chore, although it has its own lid and reservoir parts to remove for cleaning.

The manual calls for a firm, level, water-resistant surface, at least 12 inches from a wall, with mist directed away from walls, furniture and bedding. Its outlet rotates 90 degrees in either direction from the front, which gives some control over the plume and its path toward the rear air intake. That adjustment helps with placement; it is not a license to put the unit close to surfaces or aim mist at a sleeping person.

A dial and aroma tray are not humidity sensing

A rotary knob turns the appliance on and varies output. Honeywell recommends reducing the setting after the room reaches a comfortable level and suggests a separate humidity monitor; the manual describes 40–60% as comfortable and warns that condensation signals excessive humidity. The manual does not document an onboard humidity sensor, selected RH cutoff, timer, app or remote. Low-water shutoff protects against running empty; it does not stop and restart the mist to hold a humidity target. If you want that kind of control, choose a reviewed model with an actual humidistat rather than treating the HUL545’s dial as automation.

The side tray holds a separate aroma pad. Honeywell says oil passively evaporates from that pad and does not contact the water; this is not a water-based diffuser. Keep oils, inhalants and additives out of both the tank and mist outlet. The manual identifies a compatible Protec PDC51V2 demineralization cartridge as an optional aid for hard-water white dust, but it is not included in the licensed-store product details. Verify the contents of the exact package rather than assuming the cartridge is in the box.

Filter-free still means regular cleaning

There is no wick to replace, but minerals can collect on the nebulizer and reduce mist output. Honeywell recommends fresh water daily and weekly cleaning. Its manual separates scale removal from disinfecting, calls for careful brushing around the fragile nebulizer, and warns not to submerge the electrical base. Clean the tank and reservoir as instructed, rinse away vinegar or disinfecting solution, and dry the appliance completely before seasonal storage. The manual includes a cleaning brush and separately describes the right dilution for the one-gallon HUL545; do not follow the HUL525 half-gallon quantities for this model.

Honeywell’s current product page lists black HUL545B and white HUL545W. The core controls and manual describe one configuration with two finishes. There are, however, specification conflicts worth keeping visible: the official page lists a height of 11.06 inches while the licensed store lists 11.8 inches, and the official page says three-year limited warranty while the shared manual and licensed store state two years. The normalized height and the terms that apply to a particular purchase remain unresolved. Check the product’s actual paperwork and offer before relying on either number.

Who should shortlist the HUL545?

It suits someone who wants a one-gallon supply, simple manual output, visible cool mist and a separately documented aroma pad, and who accepts the inverted fill and regular hand care. It is a weak fit for anyone who needs top-fill, automatic humidity response, a verified square-foot rating, dishwasher-safe parts, app control or a guaranteed overnight interval. If half a gallon is enough and a more compact water load matters, compare the HUL525; it uses the same basic manual routine and also has the rotating outlet and aroma tray. For less tank turning, look at a top-fill design such as the HUL585. If hard-water residue is central to the decision, compare an evaporative model with its own wick-replacement schedule instead of assuming a filter-free ultrasonic machine avoids mineral maintenance.

Paper, software and setup details

Manufacturer noise claim

Honeywell calls operation ultra-quiet but supplies no decibel value; no independent measurement is claimed.

Manufacturer cleaning interval

Fresh water daily; weekly cleaning.

Water and care limits

The manual says the one-gallon capacity includes tank and base reservoir together; fill with cool water after switching off, removing and inverting the tank, and carry it with two hands. Daily fresh water and weekly cleaning are recommended. Descaling and disinfecting are separate processes; handle the nebulizer gently, do not submerge the base, and dry fully before storage. Use distilled water or model-compatible Protec PDC51V2 in hard-water conditions to help minimize white dust. The aroma pad is separate from water; no additives in the tank or outlet.
