Vornado comparisons

Vornado Lucerna 1 vs 2 vs 3: tank size, refill and controls

Lucerna 1, 2, and 3 are three capacities of the same Alchemy ultrasonic humidifier concept, not three control tiers. Their main documented differences are tank volume, body size, and the maker’s maximum-area claim. Each uses manual Low/High output, an independent multi-level light, a bottom-fill tank, and a shared cleaning guide that prohibits water additives.

Compare the figures that actually change

ModelTankListed dimensions (D × W × H)Maker’s area claimRuntime claim
Lucerna 10.5 gal5.8 × 5.8 × 11.77 inUp to 300 sq ftUp to 24 h Low / 12 h High
Lucerna 21.0 gal7.3 × 7.3 × 15.25 inUp to 500 sq ftUp to 24 h Low / 12 h High
Lucerna 31.5 gal8.38 × 8.38 × 17.88 inUp to 600 sq ftUp to 28 h Low; High figure conflicts

These numbers come from Vornado’s pages and specification tables. Area and runtime are not independent room tests. The Lucerna 3 page’s opening description says up to 14 hours on High, but a later detailed section says up to 12; the safe comparison is to treat its High runtime as unresolved. Its listed specification table also gives a more exact height than the rounded “18 inches” in the descriptive copy.

Capacity is a refill decision, not automatic humidity

The half-gallon Lucerna 1 occupies the smallest listed footprint and holds less water. The one-gallon Lucerna 2 doubles that reserve, while the 1.5-gallon Lucerna 3 holds three times as much as the 1. A larger reservoir can mean fewer refill trips in a given use pattern, but the pages do not promise the same refill interval for every setting or room. It also means more water to carry when full. The Lucerna 3’s greater height matters if the humidifier sits below a shelf; the Lucerna 1 is the most compact of the three.

All three reservoirs are filled the same way: unplug the machine, lift off the tank, invert it, unscrew the underside cap, and fill with cool water. The manual explicitly says not to pour water through the top mist outlet. If avoiding this turn-over step matters more than keeping the Alchemy silhouette, compare Vornado’s MISTIC 4, which has a different top-fill design and a much larger 4-liter tank.

The operating and care plan is shared

Lucerna 1–3 are ultrasonic visible cool-mist models. The owner’s guide documents Low, High, and Off for humidification; it does not give a humidity setpoint or automatic room-RH control. A separate light button cycles through 100%, 50%, 25%, and off, and lighting can run without humidification. These lights are brightness levels, not a color-changing function. The manual says to turn down or stop output if moisture appears on windows or walls, and to stop operation above 60% relative humidity; use a separate hygrometer to check a room.

Water and additives are the most important shared ownership caveats. Vornado suggests distilled water when hard water leaves white dust or mineral buildup. The guide forbids mineral cartridges and all additives, including aroma fragrance and water conditioners, because they may crack plastic and affect operation; it says use voids warranty. It does not provide an aroma pad. Empty the tank after use; if water remains more than eight hours, the guide calls for thorough cleaning and disinfection. Wash the tank with cool water and mild detergent. Clean the base with equal parts vinegar and water, let it stand for 20 minutes, then wipe; do not submerge or rinse the base. None is dishwasher-safe.

Which one should you shortlist?

Pick the 1 if the 0.5-gallon capacity and smaller dimensions suit a personal room and frequent refills are acceptable. Choose the 2 if one gallon is a useful middle reserve and a 15.25-inch tower fits. Choose the 3 when 1.5 gallons are worth the larger footprint and the source’s conflicting High runtime does not undermine your decision. Do not choose among them on the assumption that the maker’s square-footage ceiling guarantees your room result. If precise automatic control, warm mist, top-fill, app operation, a dishwasher-safe part, or an essential-oil route is non-negotiable, none of the three has exact documentation for that requirement; compare a model whose manual does.
