Your needs, this model
Does it fit your priorities?
Is a 1.5-gallon reservoir the minimum you are looking for?
The exact Lucerna 3 page and shared family guide identify a 1.5-gallon reservoir; smaller Lucernas hold 0.5 and 1 gallon.
Explore this need in the finder →Would you accept an 18-inch listed maximum height for the larger tank?
Vornado’s table gives the Lucerna 3 a height of 17.88 inches, while descriptive text rounds it to 18 inches.
Explore this need in the finder →Do you need the light control to include Bright, Dim and Off levels?
The exact LUCERNA guide says illumination cycles through 100%, 50%, 25% and Off, even without humidification.
Explore this need in the finder →Is Vornado’s maximum-area claim of at least 600 square feet essential?
The Lucerna 3 product page lists coverage up to 600 square feet. It is a manufacturer claim rather than a tested-room guarantee.
Explore this need in the finder →Do you require a maker-approved fragrance or essential-oil route?
No. The shared Lucerna guide says no aroma fragrance or any additive, and no separate oil route is documented.
Explore this need in the finder →Lucerna 3 is the largest Alchemy model: 1.5 gallons, the tallest body, and Vornado’s largest published area claim for this trio. Its appeal is additional water capacity with the same two-level manual ultrasonic operation and independent light found on the smaller Lucernas. One specification needs caution: Vornado’s own page gives two different high-setting runtime figures, so do not buy it on a precise high-mode runtime promise.
More water, more height
The Lucerna 3 holds 1.5 U.S. gallons, about 5.7 liters by conversion. Vornado’s table lists a footprint of 8.38 by 8.38 inches and a height of 17.88 inches, with an empty weight of 4.5 pounds. The descriptive copy rounds that height to 18 inches. In the same family, Lucerna 2 is one gallon and 15.25 inches tall, while Lucerna 1 is half a gallon and 11.77 inches tall. If you need a longer reserve but have limited shelf clearance or depth, check the actual dimensions rather than relying on a retailer’s “tower” description.
The manufacturer advertises coverage up to 600 square feet and up to 28 hours on Low. These are maker claims, not independent tests or guarantees of humidity across rooms. The High runtime is inconsistent on the official page: the opening description says 14 hours, while the detailed “Why Lucerna 3?” section says 12 hours. I leave High runtime unverified instead of choosing the more favorable number. The manual does not provide a separate room-sizing chart. Use a hygrometer if you need to monitor humidity and reduce or stop output if moisture forms on surfaces; the shared guide says not to run above 60% relative humidity.
It remains a manual, cool-mist humidifier
The Lucerna 3 is ultrasonic, with visible cool mist, and the family guide describes two manually selected levels: Low and High. Touch controls are on the base, alongside a separate illumination button. The guide calls Low suitable for nighttime or smaller rooms and High faster for larger rooms. There is no documented relative-humidity target or automatic regulation. A big reservoir does not make the unit a humidistat, and neither its decorative light nor a low-water signal measures the room’s humidity.
Lighting is independent of humidification. The touch control cycles through 100%, 50%, 25%, and off, including when the mist function is off. The lamp is not documented as color changing. If a request is specifically for a color-changing tank light, app, timer, remote, or humidity target, Lucerna 3 should be excluded even though it is the flagship-size design. If a simple warm-looking ambient lamp and manually chosen mist setting fit, the light and humidifier can be operated separately.
Refill and maintenance tradeoffs scale with the tank
This is not a top-fill model. To refill, the guide tells the owner to turn the unit off and unplug it, lift the reservoir from the base, invert it, remove the cap underneath, and fill with cool tap water. It warns not to pour water through the mist outlet. With a 1.5-gallon tank, a full refill means more water to carry than the Lucerna 1 or 2; the larger capacity may reduce the number of trips, but it does not eliminate the lift-and-turn motion.
Water quality and cleaning deserve a deliberate routine. For hard or mineral-heavy water, Vornado recommends distilled water to help limit white dust and deposits. The manufacturer guide expressly says no mineral cartridge and no additives at all, including fragrance and water conditioners; it warns that they can crack plastic and affect performance, and says their use voids warranty. There is no separate oil pad. The tank should be emptied after use; water left for eight hours or longer requires thorough cleaning and disinfection. Clean the tank with cool water and mild detergent; clean the base with a 1:1 vinegar-water solution left for 20 minutes and then wipe it. Do not submerge or rinse the base, and do not use a dishwasher. The manual recommends thorough seasonal cleaning and extra cleaning when deposits or algae appear.
Choose Lucerna 3 for reserve, not a guessed output
Its 1.5-gallon tank and 600-square-foot ceiling are the clearest reasons to choose it over Lucerna 2 or 1. The Lucerna 2 is a smaller one-gallon compromise; the 1 is easier to fit in a narrow tabletop spot, but calls for more frequent fills. All three share bottom filling, Low/High mist, a four-position light cycle, no documented humidity target, and the same restrictions on additives and dishwasher care. Moving up does not add smart operation or change how maintenance works.
Vornado lists 24 VDC, 60 Hz, and paired wattage/current values on the specification table without explaining which value belongs to which setting. I preserve those raw pairs rather than assigning a typical or maximum mode. The five-year warranty language is from Vornado and remains subject to its terms. Consider another model if exact high-setting runtime, top-fill, a more accessible refill position, automatic humidity control, or an approved fragrance method is essential. Lucerna 3 is most defensible for a buyer who values its larger reservoir and appearance, can accommodate its height, and is comfortable with manual humidity monitoring.
Model evidence: Vornado’s Lucerna 3 U.S. product page, the linked Lucerna family Owner’s Guide, and the current U.S. humidifier collection. The 28-hour Low runtime, conflicting High runtime, coverage, dimensions, electrical values and warranty language are manufacturer claims or specifications, not independent tests. The product image is exact manufacturer gallery media; Vornado does not state whether it is a photograph or render.

Paper, software and setup details
Tank-light controls
Ambient illumination is independently controlled at 100%, 50%, 25% and Off. The exact manual does not document a color-changing mode.
Manufacturer cleaning interval
Empty the tank after use. If water remains in the tank for 8 hours or more, thoroughly clean and disinfect as directed. Wash the tank with cool water and mild detergent. Clean the base with equal parts vinegar and water, let stand 20 minutes, then wipe; do not submerge or rinse the base. The manual says the product is not dishwasher-safe and recommends thorough seasonal cleaning and additional cleaning when algae, mineral deposits or particles appear.
Water and care limits
For hard or mineral-heavy water, Vornado recommends distilled water to help reduce white dust and mineral buildup. The exact shared guide forbids mineral cartridges and all additives, including aroma fragrances and water conditioners.
