Your needs, this model
Does it fit your priorities?
Would you rather use invisible evaporative output than a visible ultrasonic mist plume?
The EV100 fan moves air through a wick and releases evaporated moisture. Choose it when that method—not visible ultrasonic mist—is what you need.
Explore this need in the finder →Can you refill one removable gallon tank by turning it over, rather than pouring through the top?
The tank is filled through a removable cap after lifting and inverting it; it is not a pour-in-place top-fill design.
Explore this need in the finder →Would button-selected Auto humidity between 40% and 60% suit your room?
The manual documents selectable 40–60% humidity levels and Auto cycling, but not a live numeric humidity display.
Explore this need in the finder →Is a single-gallon tank enough if you need a small-room unit rather than a large reserve?
The maker lists a one-gallon reservoir and up to 260 square feet; the area is a claim, and refilling remains a manual task.
Explore this need in the finder →The Vornado EV100 is a small-room evaporative humidifier built around one removable, one-gallon tank and a real humidity setpoint. Its strengths are modest footprint, invisible evaporated output, and button-selected 40–60% targets; the trade is carrying and inverting the tank to refill it and replacing a wick. It is a better fit for a bedroom or office than for someone shopping by an impressive whole-home capacity claim.
A compact one-tank routine, not top-fill convenience
Vornado lists the EV100 for rooms up to 260 square feet, with a one-gallon tank and a single included filter. The tank is clear, so its remaining water is visible. To fill it, however, the manual has you lift it from the base, turn it upside down, remove its cap, add cool tap water, reseal the cap and set it back in place. That is a relatively simple removable-tank routine, but it is not the pour-through-the-top arrangement some shoppers mean by “top fill.” A full gallon still weighs enough that carrying and turning the tank may matter if you refill at a low sink or have limited grip strength.
The EV100 is an evaporative appliance: a fan moves air through a wet wick and the moisture leaves as water vapor, not a visible ultrasonic plume. Vornado promotes natural evaporation as a way to avoid the mist and white dust associated with some other humidifiers. Treat that as the maker’s positioning, not a promise that mineral deposits or cleaning disappear. The product page’s “up to 260 square feet” and “up to one gallon in 24 hours” are likewise manufacturer claims; room layout, conditions and the way you operate the unit affect what happens at home.
Humidity settings make it more than a fan with a tank
Push buttons and indicator lights control power, fan operation and humidity. The guide documents High and Low fan speeds plus Auto. You can choose a humidity level in a 40–60% range or select continuous operation. In Auto, the fan shifts among high, low and off to maintain the selected level; continuous mode disables Auto and leaves High or Low available. That distinction is useful: choose a setpoint when you want the humidifier to stop and restart in response to room humidity, or continuous when you prefer ongoing output. The guide does not present a numeric room-humidity display, so a separate hygrometer is the way to check conditions rather than reading an indicator as a live measurement.
Compared with the Vornado EVAP40, the EV100 exchanges capacity and listed room area for a smaller, one-gallon package and button-selected setpoints. EVAP40 holds four gallons across two tanks and also has automatic humidity cycling, but its mechanical control is a MIN/MAX knob without a documented percentage scale. Both evaporative units use replaceable MD1-0034 wicks and need cleaning. If you want an explicit 40–60% target, the EV100 is the clearer control choice; if a longer refill buffer and a much higher advertised area ceiling matter more, compare the EVAP40 instead. Neither product’s area figure guarantees performance across a multi-room floor plan.
Plan for the wick and regular cleaning
The EV100 includes one wick; its guide says to replace it when it hardens or stops absorbing effectively, typically after about four to eight weeks depending on use, water hardness and environmental conditions. This recurring replacement is an operating cost and chore, not an occasional accessory detail. Chemically softened water can shorten wick life, and the manual suggests checking the water choice if the wick hardens quickly. Vornado’s product materials list MD1-0034 as the replacement part family.
Vornado recommends thorough cleaning several times during the season, and when algae, mineral deposits or particles begin to form. The guide directs you to unplug first, remove the tank and wick, and clean the base and wick-support frame with warm water and mild detergent; the base, support frame and tank are not dishwasher-safe. Do not submerge the power head. The manual also says to empty the tank after use and clean and disinfect the appliance if water remains for eight hours or longer. A separate caution says to stop operation if room humidity exceeds 60%.
One care point deserves restraint: the guide’s Tips section says not to use additives, including fragrances or water conditioners, while its troubleshooting text separately suggests bacteriostat or water treatment for wick problems. Because those instructions conflict, I would not add a fragrance or treatment to the water on the strength of the troubleshooting sentence. Follow the explicit no-additives warning and ask Vornado to clarify if you need a treatment product.
Who should choose it?
Choose the EV100 if your space is near the maker’s small-room range, you prefer evaporative operation over visible mist, and a button-controlled 40–60% target is more useful than an app, timer or warm-mist mode. Its one-gallon tank is easier to accommodate than a large floor unit, but it still has to be removed and inverted for filling. Choose another design if top-fill pouring, fragrance capability, dishwasher-safe parts, remote operation, a built-in timer or warm mist is essential; those capabilities are not documented for this model. If your priority is a larger tank or a 1,000-square-foot manufacturer claim, the four-gallon EVAP40 is the closer Vornado comparison, with more water to handle and a less precise manual humidistat scale.

Paper, software and setup details
Manufacturer cleaning interval
Thoroughly clean several times during the season or when algae, mineral deposits or particles begin to form. Empty after use; if water remains for eight hours or more, clean and disinfect before use. One wick typically lasts about 4–8 weeks depending on use and water conditions.
Water and care limits
Unplug before filling, moving or cleaning; do not submerge the power head. The guide says to stop operation above 60% room humidity. Base, wick-support frame and tank are not dishwasher-safe. Its Tips section prohibits additives including fragrance and water conditioners, while a troubleshooting entry suggests bacteriostat/water treatment; because that exact manual conflicts with itself, no additive is recommended pending manufacturer clarification.
