Black HWC778B is the exact digital unit pictured and is listed by the licensed store under MPN HWC778/UPC 328785006223. FDA AccessGUDID also identifies white HWC778W, but no exact white offer or product image was verified. The common manual distinguishes HWC778 digital control from HWC775 manual control. The manual’s 30–69% setpoint range differs from store copy emphasizing 40–60%; dimensions conflict and remain unknown for matching.

A useful fit for

For someone who wants both cool and warm mist plus a current humidity display and appliance-side target cycling, can accept sensor-based local control rather than app/remote operation, and will clean both nebulizer and heating path weekly.

The main tradeoff

Sensor RH can differ from room RH. The setpoint range differs between manual and store wording; available footprint dimensions conflict; no square-foot maximum is confirmed. The inverted tank, warm-mode wait/sound, hot-steam precautions and mineral care remain.

Your needs, this model

Does it fit your priorities?

Do I need a displayed current-humidity reading and a selectable humidity target that cycles the unit?

The HWC778 manual reports current sensor RH, accepts a 30–69% setpoint and describes U.S. Humidity Reached stop/restart behavior. The sensor reading may differ from the rest of the room.

Can I require warm/cool choice and a separate heated oil cup without adding oil to the tank?

The shared manual documents both temperatures and a separate heated cup; it expressly forbids oil or inhalants in tank/reservoir.

Can I require the manual-documented 5.6-liter combined tank and reservoir capacity?

The shared HWC775/HWC778 manual states 1.5 gallons (5.6 L) for tank and reservoir combined. That is not a tank-only fill measure.

The Honeywell HWC778 adds a digital humidistat to the same Dual Comfort cool-and-warm platform as the manual-control HWC775. The practical distinction is not another mist mechanism: it is what the front panel can sense and do. HWC778 reports current relative humidity at its own sensor, accepts a setpoint, and can pause when the selected level is reached. HWC775 instead leaves temperature and mist output entirely to manual selection. If a visible humidity number and automatic stop-and-restart behavior are important, this difference is more consequential than the shared 1.5-gallon capacity.

What the HWC778 control actually does

The shared HWC775/HWC778 owner manual says the HWC778 starts in cool mist on high and displays current room humidity. Buttons select cool or warm mist, and each mode has low, medium and high output. Separate humidity arrows change the target; the display flashes the set level and then returns to the current reading. The manual permits a 30–69% setting range. When a U.S. unit reaches the target, “HUMIDITY REACHED” appears and the humidifier stops; it resumes when the sensor reading falls below the target.

That is more than a status light, but it is not room-wide measurement or remote control. The manual cautions that relative humidity around the appliance's sensor can differ from the rest of the room. A target is a local control threshold, not a guarantee that every corner reaches the same humidity. The HWC778 has no documented phone app, handheld remote or on-device timer. Its panel is still an appliance-side routine: set the desired level, choose a mist temperature and output, then let the sensor cycle it.

One product-page description says to set 40–60%, while the exact manual allows 30–69% and recommends a comfortable 40–60% range. The manual distinguishes the control's available range from a recommended comfort band. Use the manual's documented control range, and consider room conditions rather than treating the maximum setting as an everyday target. The display also is not a precision hygrometer for the whole home.

Shared cool/warm operation and tank routine

The HWC778 uses ultrasonic vibration for cool visible mist. Warm mode boils water and blends the steam vapor with a small amount of cool mist; it is not an unheated warm-air setting. Cool output begins immediately, while warm output takes about five minutes to develop. The manual notes that boiling sounds can occur and that warm mode is slightly louder. The authorized store lists up to 36 hours on the lowest setting. That longest-run claim should not be applied to high output or warm operation, which uses water faster.

Like HWC775, the HWC778 has three output levels, a two-way mist outlet and a 1.5-gallon combined tank-and-reservoir capacity (5.6 L). Filling involves removing and inverting the tank, removing its cap, filling with cool water and reinstalling it. The manual says to support the tank with both hands. The front display is a real convenience, but this model is not top-fill in the sense of pouring water into an assembled unit. If lifting and turning a full tank is a hard no, consider a documented top-fill design instead.

Both mist temperatures are visible, and neither requires a replacement wick. Ultrasonic cool mist can disperse water minerals as white dust. Warm mode adds the separate need to prevent scale at the heating element. Weekly cleaning is recommended; scale removal and disinfecting are separate procedures. After warm use, allow at least 20 minutes to cool before cleaning, and never submerge the powered base. The manual also requires a stable, waterproof placement, at least 12 inches from a wall, four feet from a bedside and out of reach of children and pets. The steam is hot even though the delivered mist is described as comfortable.

Exact model and variant boundaries

The black HWC778B is identified by the manufacturer’s current U.S. product page. The black product image is from HoneywellStore, the brand-authorized store; no exact white image was verified. The manufacturer page calls it HWC778B, while the licensed-store listing uses the shorter MPN HWC778 with UPC 328785006223; the FDA AccessGUDID record names the black unit HWC778B. That is an observed model-code difference, not evidence of a separate mechanism. AccessGUDID also lists a white HWC778W, and the shared HWC778-series manual covers its function, but no exact white product image or current white store offer was verified here. Do not assume that an image of the black unit proves a white finish is available.

Dimensions also need restraint: the manufacturer page lists 10.12 inches wide and 14.65 inches high, while the licensed listing gives 9.45 × 9.45 × 14.7 inches. Because the footprint differs, this review does not use a normalized height or width as a hard fit. The page's “large” room category is likewise not a precise square-foot rating for this version. Measure your space and leave clearance for the mist and refill routine.

When to choose it, and when not to

Choose HWC778 if you want both cool and heated mist, an on-device current humidity display and automatic stop-and-restart around a selectable target. Those questionnaire choices separate it from the manual HWC775; requiring only a simple manual button panel would point the other way. If you want automatic humidity but a warm-only unit with five comfort levels, compare HWM445. If you do not need a displayed reading or cycling, the HWC775 shares the dual-temperature concept without asking you to pay attention to a setpoint panel.

The HWC778 is a poor fit when a true top-fill tank, a verified numeric area rating, an exact footprint limit, app scheduling or a cool-mist-only unit is essential. Its display cannot replace a separate hygrometer, its longest runtime is setting-dependent, and its weekly mineral care remains part of ownership. Follow the exact manual for oil use: the dedicated heated cup is separate from the water path; essential oil or inhalant in the tank or reservoir is prohibited. Check the model suffix, image and current written seller terms before ordering.

Paper, software and setup details

Manufacturer cleaning interval

Weekly cleaning recommended; keep minerals from accumulating on the nebulizer and heating element; perform scale removal separately from disinfection.

Water and care limits

Turn off/unplug and empty for cleaning. After warm use, wait at least 20 minutes for cooling. The shared manual specifies 2.5 cups (0.6 L) distilled white vinegar for scale removal, separate bleach disinfection, a soft brush/cloth, side-pouring the base to protect the control panel, and never submerging the base. Support/maintenance routine is substantial for a filter-free unit.
