Your needs, this model
Does it fit your priorities?
Do you need a heated warm-mist setting as well as cool mist?
The current product page calls this a warm-and-cool hybrid; its model manual identifies a separate warm mode and warns that mist can be hot.
Explore this need in the finder →Do you prefer a large reservoir with top access?
The HM717S page and its identified manual both specify an 8-liter, top-fill tank.
Explore this need in the finder →Do you need maker-stated coverage of at least 500 square feet?
Dreo advertises 600 square feet, but the exact HM717S support text gives lower 215–430 square-foot context. The mismatch makes this numeric field unknown.
Explore this need in the finder →The Dreo HM717S is an 8-liter, top-fill ultrasonic humidifier that can make either cool or heated warm mist. Its larger tank and smart controls separate it from the 6-liter HM713S, but the extra water capacity is not a free upgrade: the unit is intended for a substantial room setup, uses far more electricity in warm mode, and has a placement instruction that many homes may find inconvenient.
One machine, two kinds of mist
Dreo’s current HM717S listing identifies cool and warm operation, three manual mist levels, app and voice control, and automatic humidity targeting. The manual identified for this exact model, DR-HHM007S, describes warm mist as the default setting, lets the user switch modes, and gives a selected target range from 30 to 90 percent in five-point steps. Its warm-mist warning is not a minor note: the mist can be hot, so keep the outlet away from hands and exposed skin. If you only want cool mist, the HM512S or HM524S avoids the heater while still offering app-based routines.
The page lists a maximum output of 550 mL per hour and up to 80 hours of runtime. Treat both as manufacturer claims, not a promise that the unit will run for three days at the output you need. The same exact-model FAQ says warm use consumes water faster. The product page says 28 dB, while the cited manual gives rated power of 29 W in cool mode and 300 W in warm mode. These are published specifications, not independent measurements; the warm mode is the electrically intensive choice.
Is the 8-liter size actually useful?
Eight liters can reduce refill frequency compared with the HM713S’s 6 liters, but it also means more water to handle and clean. The maker lists the unit at 6.93 pounds empty, with a body about 14.45 inches high. That height does not include the clearance needed to remove the tank cover. More importantly, the exact DR-HHM007S manual says to place the humidifier about two feet above the floor and at least 12 inches from a wall or wooden furniture. Before choosing it, confirm that a stable raised surface can carry the filled unit, leave room to refill it, and keep the mist from settling on furniture or electronics. If that location is unrealistic, a smaller humidifier is the better fit, even if it requires more frequent refills.
Do not rely on the room-area headline alone. Dreo’s product page advertises 600 square feet, while the HM717S FAQ warns about an effective range described as 215–430 square feet. Those figures cannot support one trustworthy numeric ceiling, so this review leaves area unknown and the finder will not treat a requested 500- or 600-square-foot capacity as satisfied. Measure actual room conditions rather than buying to a headline.
Smart controls do not replace upkeep
The display and buttons support manual levels, Auto mode, a timer and Wi-Fi setup; the manual says schedules, Sleep mode and cartridge reminders are available in the app. Voice assistants require the Dreo app and an account. This makes sense for someone who wants to change a target remotely, but it is more involved than a knob humidifier. The machine also includes a separate aroma-pad route: add fragrance only to its designated pad, never to the water. The manual identifies a mineral absorption pad in the warm-water path as a separate part.
Care is a real ongoing job. The manual warns that water and tank cleanliness matter, says to refresh the reservoir when the device is idle, and recommends cleaning the tank and base every three days plus monthly descaling. Warm use adds a hot mixer and heater area that must be handled only after shutdown and cooling. Dreo recommends low-mineral water to limit residue; the manual also directs users not to allow the surrounding surface or absorbent materials to get damp. A wet tabletop is not something Auto mode will solve by itself.
Who should choose it?
Choose the HM717S if you want cool and warm output in one smart top-fill machine, value an 8-liter reservoir, and can follow its placement and maintenance routine. The HM713S is the closer alternative when you want the same two mist temperatures in a smaller 6-liter body. The HM524S is the better comparison for someone who wants a 6-liter tank, custom humidity control and cool mist without warm-mode power or heat considerations. A basic evaporative model may be simpler if you do not need visible mist or connected controls.
Skip this model if you need a conflict-free room-area rating, cannot safely elevate a heavy filled appliance, want low-maintenance use, or need a purely cool-mist unit. The size is valuable only when the room and daily care routine make use of it.
