Honeywell ultrasonic minis

Honeywell HUL520 vs HUL525: MistMate or Mini Mist?

Honeywell’s HUL520 MistMate and HUL525 Mini Mist are both small, filter-free ultrasonic humidifiers with a half-gallon tank and a manual output knob. The practical difference is not size or control: the HUL525 adds a direction-adjustable outlet and a separate aroma pad, while the HUL520’s manufacturer materials do not document either feature. Both use visible cool mist, need manual humidity monitoring and require the tank to be lifted and inverted for filling.

Start with the shared routine

Both models make visible cool mist through an ultrasonic nebulizer and fan. Each uses a modest 0.5-gallon water supply, has a rotary control and shuts off when the water level is low. Each is described for small spaces, but neither Honeywell product page supplies an exact square-foot rating. If a precise area threshold is essential, neither model can satisfy it from the available rating; do not translate “small room” into an invented number.

Filling is also similar. Switch the unit off, remove the tank, turn it over and fill with cool water through the cap. That is materially different from top-fill models that accept a pitcher pour while the main reservoir stays in place. If lifting and turning a tank is inconvenient, do not let the small footprint obscure the refill step. Both require a level, water-resistant location and room around the mist outlet.

Neither mini is an automatic humidity controller. The output knob adjusts mist, and an empty-tank shutoff is not the same as a sensor that stops and restarts at a selected room humidity. Honeywell recommends a separate humidity monitor and reducing output when the room is comfortable. A selectable RH target, app, remote or timer is not documented for either model.

Where HUL525 does more

The HUL525 has an outlet that rotates 90 degrees to either side. That can make placement more flexible when the humidifier has to sit near a wall or when mist needs to be aimed away from the room’s surfaces. The manual still says to maintain wall clearance and keep the output away from furniture, bedding and the rear air intake. Directional adjustment helps positioning; it does not allow aiming mist at a person or compensate for a poor location.

The HUL525 also has a dedicated oil tray and pad. The tray is physically separate from the water path, and Honeywell describes passive evaporation rather than a water-based diffuser. The instructions expressly prohibit adding essential oil, inhalants or other additives to the tank or mist outlet. If the finder choice “separate aroma pad” is essential, select the HUL525 operating plan. The HUL520’s manual does not document an aroma pad or tray, but that absence is not affirmative evidence for a no-oil-route requirement. If the questionnaire asks for a documented route, the HUL520 remains unknown rather than being treated as a confirmed “none.”

Where HUL520 is the simpler choice

HUL520 keeps to a knob, visible cool mist and the small refill scale. Its current manufacturer page lists white and red options and states up to 18 hours, while the licensed store’s older retail listings for the HUL520B/L/R/W variants describe up to 20 hours on low and mark those listings discontinued. Because those claims conflict, the review does not place a low-setting runtime number in the matcher. The HUL525 page says up to 24 hours without naming a setting; its licensed-store listing assigns 24 hours to low. These are manufacturer/store claims, not measurements, and a fuller output setting can shorten the interval.

HUL520 may suit the person who wants the basic dial-operated mini and has no need for a separate oil tray or adjustable outlet. HUL525 may suit the person who wants its additional outlet direction and aroma route without moving to a larger tank. Neither should be selected for top-fill, a numeric area promise, or sensor-based humidity response. If you want a simpler fill path, compare a top-fill unit; if you want measured humidity control, compare a humidistat model and accept the different tank, wick or electronic maintenance that comes with it.

Care is still hands-on

Both use filter-free ultrasonic parts that can collect mineral deposits. Their manuals call for weekly cleaning, separate scale-removal and disinfecting steps, careful nebulizer handling, and no dishwasher cleaning or base submersion. The HUL525 manual additionally says to use fresh clean water every day and offers a compatible demineralization cartridge for hard water. The HUL520 manual recommends distilled water in hard-water areas and mentions different optional Protec cleaning cartridges. Do not assume those accessories are interchangeable: the model-specific manual controls.

Placement directions differ slightly: the HUL520 manual says at least four feet from a bedside, while the HUL525/HUL545 manual says three feet. Both specify at least 12 inches from a wall and warn against directing output at walls or furnishings. Follow the exact manual for the unit you have, keep water away from the electrical base, and lower output if condensation appears.

Shortlist by the answer that matters

Choose HUL525 for its explicitly documented rotating outlet and separate pad. Choose HUL520 for the basic manual-dial small-space setup with no documented aroma route. For either one, choosing ultrasonic and a dial is supported; choosing top-fill or automatic humidity response removes both. A pad requirement selects HUL525 and excludes HUL520; a documented “no route” requirement excludes HUL525, while HUL520 remains unknown and cannot satisfy it. A minimum coverage number remains unknown for both.

Read the Honeywell HUL520 review for its fill/runtime limitations, or read the HUL525 review for the directional outlet and oil-tray cautions. For a larger top-fill ultrasonic plan, see Honeywell’s HUL585; for top-fill evaporative control with a wick and humidistat, compare the HEV615.
