Water and care

Water choice, mineral residue and cleaning

Ultrasonic humidifiers turn water into a fine mist, so the water you use and the surfaces around the outlet matter. Care is not an optional extra: every model has instructions for replacing standing water, cleaning mineral scale and drying the appliance before storage.

Why water advice is part of model fit

Levoit recommends purified or distilled water for the three reviewed Classic models and advises avoiding high-mineral water. Its manuals connect mineral content with scale or white residue around the appliance. That guidance is worth considering if the humidifier will sit near electronics, dark furniture or shelves that are hard to wipe. It is not a guarantee that one water source will eliminate all deposits, and it is not permission to add a bottled treatment unless the manual specifically permits it.

On the Classic 100, the manual says not to add essential oils, water-treatment liquids or third-party water filters. The Classic 160 manual says to fill only with clean water and prohibits oil in the tank or base. Classic 300S has a separate aroma pad, but its manual still says no oils, treatments or third-party filters in the water path. A pad is not the same as mixing fragrance into the reservoir.

Follow the exact water-change and cleaning interval

The Classic 100 and Classic 300S manuals tell owners to change water daily and clean weekly, as well as before storage. The Classic 160 manual gives a more frequent cleaning interval of every three days and before storage. These instructions are not interchangeable just because the tanks look similar. Read the manual for the exact model label and the current package.

Unplug the unit before cleaning, empty the tank and base chamber only as described, and keep water away from the electrical base, outlet and air path. The Classic 100 and 300S instructions say not to put any part in a dishwasher. The 160 manual identifies its tank, cover, filter sponge and housing, mist tube and float as dishwasher-safe below 158°F / 70°C; the base is expressly not dishwasher-safe and must not be immersed. If a piece is not named in the approved list, do not assume it can go in the machine.

Descale only using the manual’s method

For scale, each linked manual gives its own vinegar procedure and rinsing steps. Use vinegar only in the maintenance process described by that manual; do not leave it in a water tank for normal misting. The cleaning brush may help reach a specified surface, but a brush or tool does not justify prying apart a sealed base. Stop and contact the maker if the unit is damaged or behaves unexpectedly.

A workable ownership plan

Before choosing, ask yourself whether you have low-mineral water available, where a water-resistant cleaning surface will be, and whether you can keep the model’s water-change interval. Consider the Classic 160 if its approved dishwasher-safe parts list matters and you accept its three-day cleaning interval. Consider the Classic 100 or Classic 300S only if daily water changes and weekly cleaning fit your routine. Tank size changes refill frequency; it does not remove the need to refresh and clean the water path.
