Vornado evaporative models

Vornado EV100 vs EVAP40: one-gallon refill routine or larger reserve?

Both the EV100 and EVAP40 use a fan and replaceable evaporative wick rather than producing an ultrasonic mist plume. The meaningful differences are the size of the water reserve, how each humidistat is set, the advertised room area, and the amount of water you must carry during refills.

Pick a tank size that you can actually refill

The EV100 has one one-gallon removable tank. Its clear tank makes the water level easy to see, and the manual’s fill sequence is straightforward: remove the tank, turn it upside down, open the cap, fill with cool tap water, close the cap and return it to the base. The capacity is modest beside the EVAP40, but the single tank takes less space and involves one reservoir rather than a pair.

The EVAP40’s total four-gallon capacity is divided between two removable tanks. That can mean fewer trips to the sink when operating for longer periods, but it also means more water to move and two tanks to fill and seat. Large capacity helps only if the household is comfortable handling the reservoirs. For a bedside room or office that needs occasional adjustment, EV100’s smaller footprint and single tank may be more practical; for a larger space with a convenient refill station, EVAP40 offers the bigger reserve.

Automatic control does not mean the same interface

EV100 uses push buttons and indicator lights. Its manual documents High and Low fan settings plus Auto, and a selectable 40–60% humidity range or continuous operation. Auto changes fan speed among high, low and off to maintain the selected humidity. Continuous operation instead uses High or Low and disables Auto. This gives buyers a stated numeric target range while preserving a simple on-device control layout.

EVAP40 also cycles around a selected humidity level, but its mechanical humidistat is a MIN/MAX knob without a numeric percentage scale. Its three manual fan speeds are High, Medium and Low; Auto changes fan speed to maintain the selected level. The higher number of fan speeds does not make its humidity setting more exact. If a chosen target range matters, EV100’s documented percentages are easier to understand. If a dial and an automatic cycle are enough, EVAP40 is the larger option.

Use maker area figures as comparisons, not promises

Vornado lists the EV100 for rooms up to 260 square feet and the EVAP40 for spaces up to 1,000 square feet. These broad manufacturer claims are useful for distinguishing the product classes, but they do not guarantee uniform humidity in every room. Closed doors, ceiling height, ventilation and the amount of dry air entering a space matter. The EV100’s one-gallon-per-day output figure is also a maker rating, not a measured promise for a particular household; the EVAP40 guide states a four-gallon-per-day maximum with its own high/continuous test condition. Do not infer that the two will deliver those totals in ordinary intermittent Auto use.

Both require wick upkeep

Neither unit is a maintenance-free way to add humidity. Both use replaceable MD1-0034 wicks; the guides give an approximate four-to-eight-week life, varying with use and water conditions. Both need periodic cleaning, and each manual has an internal conflict about additives: a clear caution advises against additives, while troubleshooting suggests water treatment for wick issues. Without manufacturer clarification, avoid treating additives as a routine recommendation. If you do not want recurring filter purchases or wick handling, compare ultrasonic alternatives—but those bring different questions about visible mist, mineral residue and their own cleaning routines.

A quick decision

  • Choose EV100 when one gallon is enough for your smaller room, a single removable tank suits your refill routine, and a 40–60% target is more useful than the EVAP40’s unmarked dial.
  • Choose EVAP40 when its four-gallon/two-tank reserve and larger advertised area are more important than carrying extra water or choosing a numerically labeled target.
  • Choose neither if your essential requirement is pour-in-place top fill, app control, a timer, warm mist or a manufacturer-approved fragrance route; these guides do not document those capabilities for either model.
