Your needs, this model
Does it fit your priorities?
Would a pour-through-the-lid refill be easier than inverting a tank?
The exact EV5 guide documents a top lid and 1.5-gallon tank that can be filled with a pitcher while seated in the base; do not lift it by the removable lid.
Explore this need in the finder →Do you need wick-fed evaporation and sensor control toward a chosen humidity setting?
The EV5 guide identifies two wicks and an automatic humidity control from 35–60% RH; select Continuous separately if you do not want the fan to slow or stop.
Explore this need in the finder →Will a stated upper room area of 670 square feet match the space you intend to humidify?
Vornado’s page says up to 670 square feet. This is a maker claim, not a promise for a specific floor plan or an independent test.
Explore this need in the finder →Can you accept two replaceable wicks and hand cleaning rather than dishwasher-safe parts?
The guide says no parts are dishwasher-safe and wicks typically need replacement after about 4–8 weeks depending on use and water. It identifies MD1-0002; the current linked two-pack listing identifies MD1-0001 as compatible with EV5, so confirm the number with Vornado.
Explore this need in the finder →Do you require Continuous operation as well as an automatic humidity target at the same time?
The manual describes CO as a mode in which the fan runs continuously regardless of room humidity; that is separate from target-based slowing and shutoff.
Explore this need in the finder →The Vornado EV5 is a larger-room evaporative humidifier built around a 1.5-gallon reservoir, two wicks, five fan speeds, and a selectable humidity target. The fill lid is on top, so water can be poured in with a pitcher; that removes the usual need to invert a full tank. In exchange, the EV5 asks for recurring wick changes and hand cleaning, and its generous area and runtime figures remain manufacturer claims rather than measurements in a particular home.
Top access without a lightweight tank
The first useful distinction is the filling routine. Vornado gives the EV5 one 1.5-gallon reservoir with a lid that opens for a pitcher or gallon jug. The owner guide also lets you remove the tank, but warns against carrying it by the lid. This is more convenient than an underside-cap tank if the appliance sits near a sink or if lifting and turning a filled tank is awkward. At 1.5 gallons, though, the tank still holds a substantial amount of water, and spills remain possible during refilling and cleaning.
The EV5 humidifies by evaporation: air moves through two water-fed wicks and out through the fan, rather than being turned into a visible ultrasonic mist. That suits a buyer who does not want a plume aimed at furniture, plants, or a nearby wall. It is not a maintenance-free route. Water-contact parts still collect deposits and need the manual’s cleaning routine, and the wicks are consumables.
Choose between a target and continuous output
Touch controls and an LED display select one of five fan speeds and a humidity target from 35% to 60%. In target operation, the EV5 runs at the selected fan speed while the room is below the target, reduces speed as it nears the setting, and turns the fan off once the room rises about three percentage points above it. The factory default is 50%. That behavior is useful when you want the appliance to pause rather than push moisture without regard to the room reading. The guide describes a display for fan speed and humidity settings, not a live numeric room-humidity readout.
Continuous (shown as “CO”) is a separate plan. The fan then runs regardless of the humidity sensor, using one of the same five speeds. That can make sense when you have a reason to keep moving moisture, but it gives up the automatic stop-and-restart behavior. Treat the two modes as alternatives, not as a single setting that offers both uninterrupted output and a setpoint cutoff.
Vornado advertises coverage up to 670 square feet, up to 54 hours on Low, and 2.85 gallons of output per day. Those numbers help identify the EV5’s intended scale, but they are not independent tests or a promise for a particular room, temperature, layout, or refill interval. The manual itself advises checking the tank during continuous use; the advertised maximum runtime should not become a set-and-forget assumption. The page’s “up to 80% more efficient” DC-motor claim also has no clear comparison basis in its displayed copy, so it is not a useful energy prediction for an individual household.
Care is the main ownership commitment
The guide says the two wicks typically last around four to eight weeks, with actual life affected by use, water hardness, and the environment. Replace them when they harden or stop absorbing effectively. There is a product-specific detail worth checking before ordering: the exact EV5 owner guide calls the replacement wick MD1-0002, whereas the current EV5 page links the MD1-0001 two-pack and the maker’s linked parts listing names EV5 compatibility. Both are Vornado sources, but they do not use the same part number. Confirm the correct replacement with Vornado rather than guessing from a similar model.
Cleaning is hands-on. Vornado recommends thorough cleaning several times in a season and whenever algae, mineral deposits, or particles appear. The tank, base, and inlet grille can be removed for the guide’s warm-water-and-vinegar cleaning; no part is dishwasher-safe, and the power head must not be submerged. Empty the base after use. If water remains in the base while the unit is off for eight hours or longer, the guide calls for cleaning and disinfection before restarting. It also warns against fragrances and other additives in the tank or base because they may damage plastic and void the warranty. Stop operating if room humidity exceeds 60%.
Who is the EV5 for?
Choose it when invisible evaporative output, top access, a meaningful 1.5-gallon refill, and a manually selected 35–60% target are more useful than an app or warm-mist setting. The maker positions speeds 1–2 for quieter nighttime or smaller-room operation and 3–5 for more airflow; no numerical sound rating is published in the materials reviewed.
Within Vornado’s evaporative range, compare the EV5 with the EV3 if you want a similar top-pour 1.5-gallon approach but would use its ten fan speeds. The EVDC300 is a smaller one-gallon model whose exact guide instead calls for lifting and inverting its tank; its Energy Smart mode varies speed toward a target, but Turbo and Continuous belong to separate fixed-speed plans. If the refill method or operating mode is essential, choose by the exact guide rather than by “whole room” wording. Neither an area claim nor a larger tank alone settles how a humidifier will behave in your home.

Paper, software and setup details
Manufacturer noise claim
The exact guide positions fan speeds 1–2 for quiet/nighttime use and 3–4 for moderate room operation; no numeric noise rating is stated.
Manufacturer cleaning interval
Thoroughly clean several times through the season and when algae, mineral deposits or particles appear. Empty after use; if turned off with water in the base for 8 hours or more, clean and disinfect before use. Replace two wicks approximately every 4–8 weeks as use and water conditions require.
Water and care limits
Unplug before filling, moving, cleaning or servicing; do not pour water through the power-head outlet, submerge the power head, or use a dishwasher (no part is dishwasher-safe). The manual says to stop operation if room RH exceeds 60%. It explicitly prohibits additives in the tank/base and states they may damage plastic and void warranty. The exact guide names wick MD1-0002, while the exact product page links MD1-0001, whose official compatible-part page names EV5; consult Vornado before replacement.
