Your needs, this model
Does it fit your priorities?
Do you require at least a three-liter water capacity?
The shared VUL525/545 manual identifies 3.8 L (one gallon) for VUL545, tank plus base reservoir.
Explore this need in the finder →Would removing and inverting a full one-gallon tank be manageable at each refill?
VUL545 is not top-fill; its manual directs the owner to lift and invert the removable tank before adding cool water.
Explore this need in the finder →Is a directional outlet that can turn up to 180 degrees useful in your placement?
The shared series manual describes a directional outlet that rotates up to 180 degrees.
Explore this need in the finder →Do you need an aroma pad, but not essential oils directly in the tank?
VUL545 has a separate VapoPad drawer, and its exact family manual prohibits adding oil or medication to the water path.
Explore this need in the finder →Vicks VUL545 is a one-gallon, filter-free ultrasonic cool-mist humidifier with a manual mist knob and a separate VapoPad drawer. It shares its owner manual and basic routine with the smaller VUL525, but doubles the combined tank-and-reservoir capacity from 0.5 to 1 gallon. That extra water and the manufacturer’s “medium room” label are the meaningful reasons to choose it—not a digital humidistat, a top-fill lid or a measured square-foot guarantee.
Read the capacity and fill method together
The current U.S. Vicks page identifies the VUL545 SKU and lists a one-gallon tank and up to 36 hours of runtime. The shared VUL525/545 manual specifies 3.8 liters for VUL545, counting both the tank and the base reservoir. The page calls its room size medium, but does not state a numeric upper area for this SKU. A gallon is stored water, not the amount the humidifier adds to a room per hour; the exact manual provides no maximum mist-output figure or setting-specific runtime. Use those product-page claims as a comparison point, not as proof that a specific open-plan room will reach your preferred humidity.
VUL545 is not a top-fill machine. The manual’s sequence is to switch it off, remove and invert the tank, take off the cap, fill with cool water, replace the cap and seat the tank on the base. That is more lifting than pouring into a top opening, particularly when the container is full. If a full one-gallon tank is too heavy or awkward to carry to your sink, the smaller VUL525 may be the more manageable sibling even though it needs more frequent refills. Vicks does not provide a product weight on these pages, so compare the water load and your own handling needs rather than infer a weight from the dimensions.
Manual control, not automatic humidity
The VUL545 uses a simple power knob for on/off and variable mist output. The manual says to reduce the setting once a comfortable level is reached and suggests a separate humidity monitor; the device does not show a percentage, choose a humidity target or stop and restart based on a selected setpoint. It has no documented app, remote or built-in timer. The unit does switch off when water is low or when the tank is removed, but that is a low-water safeguard, not humidity automation. If you need automatic moisture response, a selectable target or a timed shutoff, compare an exact model whose manual documents that feature rather than treating the VUL545’s longer runtime claim as a substitute.
The family’s ultrasonic mechanism creates visible cool mist by vibrating water. Vicks says the outlet can be aimed and the owner manual says it rotates through 180 degrees. That helps direct the plume away from a wall or bedding, but it does not change the required placement. Vicks advises a firm, level, waterproof surface, at least 12 inches from a wall, four feet from the bedside and beyond the reach of children and pets; do not aim mist at furniture or bedding. Leave the room door partly open and do not leave the appliance unattended in a closed room, as the manual directs.
White residue and cleaning should be part of the decision
Vicks explains that minerals in hard water can pass into ultrasonic mist and settle as white dust. Distilled water or the compatible Protec PDC51V2/PDC51CV2 cartridge may help reduce that residue; the cartridge is optional and not supplied. Use fresh clean water daily. Weekly cleaning is specified, and the manufacturer divides descaling and disinfection into separate processes. Do not combine vinegar and bleach, keep water out of the fan opening and control, and do not put any component in a dishwasher. If your routine cannot accommodate carrying a tank to a sink, emptying the base and cleaning it regularly, a different humidifier style may suit you better.
VUL545 has a separate drawer for Vicks VapoPads; the product page says it accepts up to two and includes one sample. The pad sits apart from the water path. The manual says each pad can provide up to eight hours of vapor, cautions against handling it directly and notes restrictions for infants and small children. Do not pour essential oil or medication into the water tank, reservoir, base or mist outlet. The pad is an optional scent route; it does not turn the VUL545 into a warm-mist or medical-treatment device.
Who should choose VUL545?
This is the stronger fit if your priority is one gallon of water in a compact, manually controlled cool-mist unit, you accept the inverted-tank refill and weekly care, and the manufacturer’s medium-room category is an adequate coarse guide. The U.S. page lists 7.87 by 11.06 inches but does not label the dimension axes; do not use that string as a verified height for a shelf clearance. VUL525 is the smaller sibling at 1.9 liters with a small-room classification and an “up to 24 hours” claim. Both are 120 V, 60 Hz and 25 W according to the shared manual, both are cool-mist only, and both have the same care and placement cautions. Neither publishes an exact square-foot coverage or measured humidity result. If a numeric room limit is essential, do not let “medium” stand in for a figure Vicks did not publish on the VUL545 page.

Manufacturer cleaning interval
Fresh clean water daily; weekly cleaning, with descaling and disinfection performed separately.
Water and care limits
The VUL525/545 owner manual advises distilled water or a compatible PDC51V2/PDC51CV2 cartridge in hard-water areas to help reduce white dust; fresh water daily; weekly cleaning; separate scale removal and disinfection; no dishwasher; and no mixing vinegar with bleach. Keep water out of the fan opening and power knob and do not submerge the base. Use cool water and invert the tank to fill.
