Your needs, this model
Does it fit your priorities?
Do you need the exact VUL500 manual to permit essential oil directly in the tank?
Yes: the VUL500 manual permits only 100% natural essential oils in the water tank/reservoir, within the manual's handling directions. The product page's VapoSteam bullet conflicts with the manual's medication warning and is not treated as tank permission.
Explore this need in the finder →Would you rather keep an aroma pad in its separate drawer instead of adding oil to the water?
The VUL500 manual separately identifies a scent-pad door and the manufacturer documents a VapoPad sample; that route does not require oil in the tank.
Explore this need in the finder →Is a seven-color night-light you can cycle, pause and turn off useful in your room?
The VUL500 manual describes a color-changing light button with color cycling, hold-current-color and off actions; no Bright/Dim/Off control is documented.
Explore this need in the finder →Do you need the manual to show an on-device mist knob rather than humidity-target automation?
Yes: VUL500 uses a manual output knob, and its exact manual documents no humidity target, app or timer.
Explore this need in the finder →The Vicks VUL500 SleepyTime combines a small-room cool-mist humidifier with a seven-color night-light and two maker-documented scent options. Its appeal is the extra atmosphere, not automatic humidity control: a manual knob sets output, the tank must be turned upside down to refill, and weekly mineral care is part of the routine.
What the three-in-one label means
Vicks identifies the U.S. model as SKU VUL500 and describes it as an ultrasonic cool-mist unit, an essential-oil diffuser and a color-changing night-light. The current product page lists a 0.6-gallon tank, a small-room classification, adjustable mist, automatic shutoff when empty and a maximum of up to 24 hours on the lowest setting. That last figure is the manufacturer’s claim, not a measured all-night guarantee; the page does not give a square-foot limit, humidity output rate or test conditions. “Small room” is a useful starting label, not a room-size promise.
The control scheme stays simple. A rotary power knob turns the unit on and adjusts output; a separate button cycles the light through seven colors, holds the current color, then turns it off. There is no manual-documented humidity sensor, chosen relative-humidity target, app, remote or timer. The manual points owners toward a separate humidity monitor and says to reduce or stop output if condensation shows up on windows, walls or nearby surfaces. If a set-and-forget target is essential, this design is not a match.
Refilling takes a little more handling
The VUL500 is bottom-fill, not a pour-in top-fill model. Vicks’ illustrated VUL500 manual instructs you to remove the tank, turn it over, unlock and remove the cap, fill with cool water, reseal it and return it to the base. The page’s 0.6-gallon figure is about 2.27 liters by unit conversion; it is not a separate liter value printed in the manual. A moderate reservoir can be easier to carry than a gallon-size tank, but it still means lifting a filled, upside-down tank and checking the cap seal. If that grip or motion is awkward, compare top-fill alternatives rather than choosing by the SleepyTime name alone.
Its listed dimensions are 8.6 by 8.15 by 8.23 inches, although the exact product page does not identify which axis each number represents. Plan for the mist outlet, cord and tank removal in addition to the listed footprint. The manual calls for a firm, level, water-resistant surface at least 12 inches from a wall, directs mist away from bedding and furniture, and says not to leave the unit unattended in a closed room. It also specifies four feet between the humidifier and bedside and keeping it beyond children’s and pets’ reach. Cool mist is a temperature choice, not a substitute for following those placement rules.
Scent options have an important documentation wrinkle
The manual gives two distinct routes: a separate slot for one VapoPad, and a direct-to-tank option for a few drops of 100% natural essential oil. It warns that oils belong only in the tank and reservoir because other parts are not oil-proof. However, Vicks’ product page also says “compatible with Vicks VapoSteam,” while the exact manual says not to put medications such as VapoSteam in the water tank, base, reservoir or mist outlet. Those instructions conflict. Follow the manual and do not add VapoSteam to the water path unless Vicks clarifies the discrepancy for this model. A designated VapoPad is not the same thing as pouring liquid inhalant into the tank.
If fragrance is not wanted, the unit still operates as a humidifier and the light can be switched off. If fragrance is essential, decide which route you actually want: a replaceable pad kept outside the water or oil deliberately placed in the tank under the manual’s conditions. These options should not be collapsed into one generic “aromatherapy” checkbox.
Water quality and cleanup matter
Ultrasonic humidifiers can leave mineral residue when hard tap water is dispersed as visible mist. Vicks says distilled water can minimize the white dust, and recommends daily fresh water and weekly cleaning. The manual separates scale removal from disinfecting, warns not to mix vinegar and bleach, prohibits dishwasher cleaning, and says not to submerge the base or let water enter the fan opening or power knob. The nebulizer is a small part that needs gentle cleaning. This is a poor fit for someone who expects an appliance that can sit wet for weeks or be put in the dishwasher.
Choose it against the Vicks alternatives
Compared with the VUL525, the VUL500 trades the VUL525’s simpler pad-only fragrance route for a light and a manual-approved essential-oil-in-tank option; both are small-class, bottom-fill ultrasonic cool-mist models, but the VUL500’s 0.6-gallon claim is larger than the VUL525’s 0.5 gallon. The VUL545 is the capacity choice at one gallon and a manufacturer-stated medium-room class, but it has no documented color-changing night-light or direct essential-oil tank route. All three require a person to manage output, refill from underneath and keep up with cleaning. Choose the VUL500 when its light, manual scent options and moderate tank size suit your room; choose another model if top-fill, a numeric area rating, warm mist, app control or automatic humidity regulation is non-negotiable.

Paper, software and setup details
Manufacturer noise claim
Vicks describes whisper-quiet/quiet operation without a decibel value; this is a manufacturer description, not an independent measurement.
Manufacturer cleaning interval
Replace with fresh clean water daily; clean weekly; perform scale removal and disinfection separately.
Water and care limits
The official VUL500 Series manual requires a firm, level, water-resistant surface at least 12 in from walls, and places the unit at least four feet from a bedside and out of children's and pets' reach; it says not to leave the appliance unattended in a closed room or aim mist at walls, furniture or bedding. Fill by removing and inverting the tank, using cool water and locking the cap. It allows only 100% natural essential oils in the tank/reservoir or a separate VapoPad in the scent-pad drawer. The product page separately says compatible with VapoSteam, but the model manual says not to put medicines such as VapoSteam into the mist outlet, base, reservoir or tank; do not endorse VapoSteam pending manufacturer clarification. The manual recommends separate weekly scale-removal/disinfection steps, no dishwasher, no base submersion, no vinegar/bleach mixing, and distilled water to reduce white mineral residue.
