Your needs, this model
Does it fit your priorities?
Do you need heated warm mist rather than ultrasonic cool mist?
Yes. The HWM845-series manual describes a boiling chamber that heats tank water into steam vapor; it is not the ultrasonic cool-mist mechanism used by the HUL585 and HUL588.
Explore this need in the finder →Do you require a separate cup at the warm-steam chimney for the documented oil/inhalant route?
Yes. The manual identifies an Essential Oil Cup on the mist chimney for passive evaporation outside the water path. It explicitly says the unit is not a diffuser and forbids oils or inhalants in the tank, reservoir or chimney.
Explore this need in the finder →Would a manual high/low rotary control work, or must the humidifier sense a humidity setting?
The HWM845 has only an off/high/low power knob and a refill/reset indicator. The manual recommends a separate humidity monitor; it does not document a built-in sensor, selectable cutoff or automatic humidity cycling.
Explore this need in the finder →Can you manage a bottom-cap tank and the specified dishwasher-safe removable parts?
The tank must be removed and its underside cap unscrewed for cool-water filling. Only the oil cup, water tray and heating-element cover are permitted on the top dishwasher rack under the manual’s temperature and no-detergent rules; the tank, chimney and base are not dishwasher-safe.
Explore this need in the finder →The Honeywell HWM845 is a small, traditional warm-mist humidifier for someone who specifically wants heated vapor and is willing to keep a simple tank-and-knob appliance clean. Its practical differences are the high/low output selector, one-gallon bottom-fill tank, separate essential-oil cup, and several removable parts the manual allows in the top rack of a dishwasher. It is not a humidistat model: the knob does not sense room humidity or stop at a chosen percentage.
What the HWM845 does—and what its controls do not
Water flows from the tank into a boiling chamber, where it is heated and released as warm steam. Honeywell documents a filter-free design, two output settings, a power light and a reset light for an empty tank. The manual says visible steam may take three to four minutes to appear after startup. After a room reaches a comfortable level, the manual suggests switching to low and using a separate humidity monitor; no built-in humidity reading, automatic humidity target, app, remote or timer is documented.
The manufacturer describes the unit for a medium room, but the reviewed page gives no square-foot limit. It advertises up to 24 hours per fill. A licensed Honeywell store page specifies 24 hours on low, but the current manufacturer page does not tie the general “up to” figure to one setting. Treat runtime as a conditional claim, not a promise for every room or an independent test. The one-gallon capacity is the more useful planning fact: output setting and how dry the room is affect how often you refill.
Refilling is a hands-on, bottom-cap routine
This is not a pour-through-the-top design. Lift off the tank, turn its cap off, fill with cool water, secure the cap without overtightening, and return the tank to the base. Honeywell advises carrying the tank with two hands—one at the handle and one under the tank. If your routine depends on filling directly in place, or you would rather not invert and handle a full tank, a top-fill unit such as the HUL585 or electronically controlled HUL588 is a better match.
The warm-steam format changes where the humidifier can sensibly sit. The manual calls for a firm, level, water-resistant surface at least 12 inches from a wall, directs steam away from walls, bedding and furniture, and says to keep the hot-steam appliance and cord out of reach of children and pets. It also specifies four feet from a bedside. Steam can burn, so this is a poor choice for an accessible nursery or a location where a child or pet can reach the unit. If cool mist is essential, choose another technology instead of trying to work around that risk.
The oil cup and dishwasher details are real, but limited
HWM845 has a separate cup at the steam chimney for a few drops of essential oil or a manufacturer-compatible liquid inhalant. Honeywell says the liquid evaporates passively in the cup rather than mixing with water; this is not a water-tank diffuser. Never pour oil, medication, inhalant or another additive into the tank, reservoir or chimney. If you specifically want a cup attached to a warm-steam chimney, that is a different arrangement from an ultrasonic aroma pad or a base-chamber oil tray.
“Filter-free” does not mean no care. Weekly cleaning is recommended, and the manual separates scale removal from disinfecting. Mineral buildup on the heating element can reduce output and illuminate the reset light. Wait until the unit cools, unplug it, use the manual’s soft-brush and vinegar procedure for scale, and do not pour vinegar directly onto the heating element or rinse that element or chimney under running water. The manual permits only the essential-oil cup, water tray and heating-element cover on the top rack of a residential dishwasher below 158°F, on a light or normal cycle without detergent. The tank, mist chimney and base are not dishwasher-safe.
Who should shortlist it
Choose HWM845 when heated warm mist is a real preference, a manual high/low control is enough, you can place it safely away from children and pets, and you are comfortable emptying and cleaning a boiling-chamber appliance. Its approximately one-gallon capacity, no-wick design and serviceable removable care parts make the routine understandable; none removes the need to manage mineral scale or watch room humidity yourself.
If you require a selectable humidity cutoff, an automatic humidistat such as the Honeywell HUL588 is the more relevant Honeywell comparison. If you want a cool ultrasonic top-fill and a simpler dial, compare the HUL585. If a child-accessible location, a numeric humidity display, a documented square-foot rating or a product-specific runtime guarantee is essential, this assessment does not establish that HWM845 meets it. The white HWM845W is listed as discontinued by the licensed store and remains a finish reference, not a buying recommendation; the current black HWM845B listing is the variant used for the image and current-page match. Paper, software and setup details
Manufacturer cleaning interval
Weekly cleaning is recommended; follow separate scale-removal and disinfecting procedures; completely dry before seasonal storage.
Water and care limits
Allow at least 20-30 minutes to cool before cleaning. The manual cautions against hard abrasives and rinsing the heating element or chimney under running water. Mineral scale on the heating element can reduce mist and illuminate the reset light. Only the top-rack parts listed in dishwasher_safe_parts_note are dishwasher-safe.
