Black HWM445B is the exact pictured configuration. The manual names the operating family HWM440 Series and separately describes the HWM445 humidistat; white HWM445W is registry-identified but has no verified exact image or offer here. The manual and licensed-store warranty terms differ, so check the written terms supplied with a specific offer.

A useful fit for

For an adult household that specifically wants top-fill warm steam and a humidity-responsive stop/restart cycle, can manage weekly heating-element care, and can place a hot-steam appliance out of reach of children and pets.

The main tradeoff

The five comfort levels are not a numeric humidity readout or stated percent setpoint; area is labeled large without a confirmed square-foot figure. Hot steam, scale care and the warranty listing conflict matter more than the up-to runtime claim.

Your needs, this model

Does it fit your priorities?

Do you require a top-fill warm-steam appliance rather than an inverted tank or cool mist?

The HWM445B fills through its broad top opening and heats water in a boiling chamber. It is a warm-steam model, not an ultrasonic cool-mist unit.

Must the humidifier automatically stop and restart around a selected humidity level?

Yes, within limits: the HWM445 has five selectable comfort levels and a humidity-reached light; it cycles to maintain the selected level. It does not show or accept a numeric relative-humidity percentage.

Do you want a separate oil cup at the warm-steam chimney?

The manual documents this separate cup for a few drops of oil or compatible inhalant. The liquid evaporates outside the water path; nothing should be poured into the tank, reservoir or mist outlet.

Do you want manual-confirmed dishwasher parts even though the tank and base must be washed another way?

The exact manual allows only the top cover, mist chimney and heating-element cover on the top rack under specified low-temperature, no-detergent conditions. It does not make the tank or main housing dishwasher-safe.

The Honeywell HWM445 is the warm-steam choice in this family for someone who wants more than a manual high/low switch: it combines two output levels with a five-level humidistat that can stop and restart around a selected comfort setting. Its 1.5-gallon tank fills from the top, and it has a separate oil cup at the steam chimney. The key distinction is not that it shows a precise room-humidity number—it does not—but that it can cycle after you choose one of its humidity settings.

Five humidistat levels are not a percentage display

The HWM445B product page describes five preset comfort levels and two comfort/output settings. The HWM440 Series manual explains the operation more usefully: the unit starts at high output and high humidity, lets you change the moisture output between high and low, and lets you adjust the humidistat. The manual says to move the humidity control downward one step at a time, waiting about two seconds, until the humidity-reached light comes on and the unit switches off. That chosen level is then maintained by cycling on and off.

That is real automatic humidity response, unlike an empty-tank shutoff or a timer. But there is no numeric relative-humidity display and no stated percent for each of the five levels. If your essential need is to set exactly 45% RH or read the room’s measured percentage on the appliance, this documentation does not establish that fit; use a separate hygrometer and choose another model if a numeric display is required. If a manual output knob is enough, the HWM440 uses the same basic warm-steam architecture with a simpler center-off/low/high switch. If you want automatic response without heated steam, compare an ultrasonic model such as Honeywell HUL588 instead.

Top filling changes the refill routine, not the heat

Honeywell lists a 1.5-gallon capacity and a wide top-fill opening. The manual describes pouring water into the fill area, so you can top up at the appliance or take the tank to a sink. A low-water reset light and automatic shutoff address an empty tank; neither function is a humidity timer. The current manufacturer page says up to 24 hours per filling, while a licensed Honeywell store page attaches its 24-hour claim to low output. Treat this as a conditional estimate rather than a promised interval in a particular room. Honeywell calls the room size large, but the exact page does not publish a square-foot range or output rate.

Warm mist has a placement constraint that matters more than the room-size label. Water is heated in a boiling chamber before steam leaves the chimney. The manual warns that the steam can burn, requires a stable water-resistant surface, calls for at least 12 inches from a wall, directs steam away from bedding, furniture and walls, and says the unit and cord must stay out of children’s and pets’ reach. It also advises keeping the humidifier four feet from a bedside. Do not treat a top-fill design as making the hot vapor child-safe; if a child can reach the appliance, cord or steam path, choose cool mist or evaporative humidification instead.

The oil cup is separate from the tank

The manual identifies an essential-oil cup on the steam chimney. A few drops of oil or a compatible liquid inhalant evaporate from that cup without mixing with the water. It is not a tank diffuser. Honeywell explicitly warns against adding essential oils, medicine, inhalants or other additives to the tank, reservoir or mist outlet. If your desired oil route is a removable aroma pad, a base chamber or no oil feature, the HWM445 is not the same arrangement.

“Easy to care” still means weekly scale work

Weekly cleaning is recommended because mineral scale on the heating element can reduce output and trigger the reset light. Turn the appliance off, unplug it and wait at least 20 minutes after use before disassembling it. The manual separates scale removal from disinfecting; do not combine the two processes. Use its vinegar instructions and a soft brush. Avoid hard brushes, steel wool and other abrasives on the coated heating element.

The dishwasher allowance is specific: the top cover, mist chimney and heating-element cover may go on the top rack of a residential dishwasher below 158°F, using a light or normal cycle without detergent or soiled dishes. The tank, main housing, float and other parts are not dishwasher-safe. The cup’s presence does not mean the whole unit can be machine-washed. Read the included manual before cleaning, particularly if you are accustomed to a cool-mist reservoir.

Check the exact suffix and paperwork

HWM445B is the exact black retail model (licensed-store MPN HWM445BV1). The white art below is the HWM440 Series manual’s electronic-control unit; the manual reserves its five-level humidistat for HWM445, and AccessGUDID identifies HWM445W as white. This cross-source match supports the render, not a separate white retail listing or current stock. Warranty terms conflict: the manual says three years while the licensed HWM445B store lists two; verify the paperwork supplied with the exact item and seller.

Choose HWM445 when top filling, warm steam and the selectable cycling humidistat matter together, and your room can safely accommodate a hot-steam appliance. If you want its top-fill tank and simple switch without automatic humidity cycling, the HWM440 manual-control mode is the closer comparison. If you can accept a smaller one-gallon bottom-cap tank and manual knob, Honeywell HWM845 is another warm-steam alternative. If cool mist is essential, do not trade away that requirement just to get a similar control feature. Paper, software and setup details

Manufacturer cleaning interval

Weekly cleaning recommended; keep mineral scale off the heating element and perform scale removal separately from disinfection.

Water and care limits

Allow at least 20 minutes to cool after use before cleaning. Follow the HWM440 Series manual for its vinegar scale-removal and separate disinfection steps; use a soft brush, not hard abrasives, steel wool or scrapers. Keep water away from the control panel and heating element as instructed. The three authorized dishwasher-safe parts and restrictions are listed above.
