Your needs, this model
Does it fit your priorities?
Would a listed one-gallon reservoir be useful if the tank still has to be lifted and turned over?
The licensed-store listing says one gallon, but the manual's refill steps still require removing and inverting the tank, supporting it with both hands and filling with cool water. Choose top-fill if that handling step is a deal-breaker.
Explore this need in the finder →Is a manual output knob acceptable if you will monitor room humidity separately?
The HUL535 manual describes a rotary control and recommends an external humidity monitor; it does not document an onboard sensor or selected humidity cutoff.
Explore this need in the finder →Does an essential-oil feature have to be documented as a separate pad or tray in the exact manual?
Yes, if the oil route is essential. The store listing uses a general oil-feature phrase, but the HUL535 manual does not identify where oil may be used; that unknown is not a confirmed aroma-pad or tank route.
Explore this need in the finder →Do you need a humidistat that automatically stops or restarts mist at a chosen target?
The HUL535 only documents manual output adjustment, so require a model with a confirmed humidity-sensing plan if automatic response is essential.
Explore this need in the finder →Honeywell’s HUL535 is an earlier, filter-free ultrasonic humidifier that makes visible cool mist from a one-gallon tank according to the Honeywell-licensed product listing. The black HUL535B and white HUL535W use the same HUL535-series manual. Its useful case is straightforward: a rotary output control, no wick to replace and a capacity larger than the half-gallon HUL525. Its limits matter just as much: the tank must be lifted and inverted to fill, the control is manual rather than humidity-sensing, and the exact manual does not explain the product listing’s generic “essential oil feature.”
Capacity does not make this a top-fill model
The licensed Honeywell Store identifies both finishes as one-gallon ultrasonic cool-mist humidifiers, labels the intended room “medium,” and claims up to 24 hours on low. These are published product specifications, not a measured room result or guaranteed interval. The HUL535 owner manual does not provide a numeric area rating or a runtime promise, so neither the room label nor the longest-run estimate tells you whether the appliance will maintain a chosen humidity in your particular space.
Refilling is an involved tank routine even though the listed capacity is one gallon. Honeywell’s instructions say to switch the humidifier off and unplug it, remove the tank from the base, turn it upside down, open the cap, and fill it with cool—not warm or hot—water. Refit the cap seal and lock the cap before returning the tank to the base. The manual says to support the tank with both hands and warns that banging or dropping it can damage the tank and cause leaks. If repeated lifting, inverting or cap handling is inconvenient, the top-fill HUL585 changes that chore; a one-gallon number alone does not.
A knob means you are in charge of the humidity level
The HUL535 produces visible cool mist through an ultrasonic disk and a small fan. A manual rotary knob adjusts the output, and the manual advises starting at a higher setting, then turning it down when the room reaches a comfortable level. It recommends using a separate humidity monitor and says to stop operation if condensation appears on windows, walls or around the humidifier. This is a real operating responsibility: the unit has no documented room-humidity sensor, chosen RH cutoff, automatic restart, timer, app or remote. A low-water shutoff is not the same thing as a humidistat.
The listing describes the product as quiet, but neither a decibel number nor an independent sound measurement is available. It calls the outlet directional, while the manual does not specify a direction range or adjustment procedure. Place it on a firm, level, water-resistant surface, at least 12 inches from a wall, keep the mist away from walls and bedding, and do not leave it unattended in a closed room where condensation can form. The manual also gives a four-foot separation from a bedside and says to keep the appliance out of reach of children and pets; that placement instruction can make this a poor choice for a small nightstand.
“Filter-free” still has a water-care cost
There is no wick to replace, but mineral deposits can slow the nebulizer. Honeywell requires weekly cleaning and gives separate instructions for scale removal and disinfecting; they must not be combined. Do not put any component in a dishwasher, do not submerge the electrical base, and keep water away from the rear fan opening and power knob. In hard-water areas, the manual says distilled water can minimize white dust. It also lists optional Protec cleaning cartridges, but the product listing does not confirm that a cartridge is included. Empty and dry all parts before seasonal storage.
Do not assume an oil route from a short listing phrase
The licensed product page advertises an “essential oil feature.” However, the HUL535 manual’s parts diagram and operating instructions do not show a separate oil pad or tray, identify a permitted tank route, or say where an oil product may be used. That is not evidence that oil is safe in the tank, reservoir or mist outlet. If you require an expressly documented aroma pad, compare the HUL545 or HUL585 instead; their manuals describe a separate pad. Keep the HUL535’s route unknown rather than treating a broad listing phrase as a usage instruction.
Who should consider the HUL535?
This review is most useful for identifying an existing HUL535 or evaluating a specific offer for an older model. Honeywell Store marks both HUL535B and HUL535W discontinued, so this should not displace a current-reference choice by default. It makes sense only if the manual dial, visible cool mist and listed one-gallon capacity fit your routine, you can safely lift and turn the tank, and you are prepared to adjust output while monitoring humidity yourself. The black and white finish listings share the same operating plan; the model and finish need to be checked on a used or older offer.
For nearly the same tank-handling style with a documented separate aroma pad and a longer maker-published low-setting runtime claim, compare the HUL545. If you want to fill at the top and still have a separate pad, the larger HUL585 is a more relevant alternative, though it remains a manual-dial ultrasonic model rather than a humidistat. If you specifically need automatic humidity response, select an actual sensor-controlled plan rather than expecting this simple rotary control to do that work.

Paper, software and setup details
Manufacturer noise claim
The licensed-store listing calls operation ultra-quiet; no decibel value or independent sound measurement is documented.
Manufacturer cleaning interval
Weekly cleaning; follow manual fill, emptying and storage instructions.
Water and care limits
The manual says unplug and empty before cleaning or moving; weekly cleaning is required, with scale removal and disinfecting performed separately. Do not wash components in a dishwasher, submerge the base or allow water into the rear fan opening or power knob. In hard-water areas distilled water can minimize white mineral dust. The manual lists optional Protec PC-1, PC-1C or PC-2 cleaning cartridges; package inclusion is not confirmed. Completely dry the unit before seasonal storage.
