A useful fit for

For someone who prefers a wick-and-fan evaporative humidifier without a visible plume, wants a user-selected Auto target and app control, and can maintain the washable/replacement wick and provide the manual-required raised placement.

The main tradeoff

The 10 L capacity and app/Auto controls come with a non-simple refill that requires removing the upper assembly, a strict 60 cm above-floor placement instruction, weekly wick cleaning and a three-month replacement recommendation. It has no included remote, heated mist or documented aroma route.

Your needs, this model

Does it fit your priorities?

Would you rather use wick-fed evaporation with no visible ultrasonic mist plume?

Dreo identifies the 774S as an evaporative wick-filter humidifier, unlike the visible mist produced by ultrasonic models.

Is a 10 L tank useful, and can you manage the required elevated placement?

The manual lists a 10 L tank and calls for a stable surface at least 60 cm above the floor; the 24.68-inch appliance also needs the room the placement instruction requires.

How high above the floor can your stable raised surface be for the 774S?

The HM774S manual calls for a firm, level surface at least 60 cm above the floor. Its placement requirement is recorded in the operating plan so an entered surface height can be checked rather than assumed.

Dreo’s 774S takes a different route from the brand’s mist-producing towers: air passes through a wet wick rather than an ultrasonic plate sending visible droplets into the room. That makes the 10-liter, app-controlled evaporative model worth considering when a visible plume is not wanted. The trade is more hands-on filter care and a filling routine that involves taking apart the upper assembly, not simply pouring into an exposed opening.

Evaporation instead of an ultrasonic plume

The manufacturer calls the 774S “mist-free” and identifies it as an evaporative humidifier. Its operating parts include a wick filter, fan and water path. The practical distinction is that it is not designed to throw a visible stream of droplets like an ultrasonic cool-mist unit. This is a mechanism choice, not an air-cleaning or health-treatment promise.

Dreo advertises a 10-liter reservoir, up to 50 hours of runtime, maximum output of 800 mL per hour and room coverage up to 1,000 square feet. Those are manufacturer figures, not independent room-performance results, and the runtime claim is not tied to a specific fan setting. Treat the area number as an upper claim rather than a promise for a house with closed doors, high ceilings or a different climate. The 774S is more relevant to a large single room or connected space than a tiny bedside nook, but room shape and airflow still matter.

At 24.68 inches tall and about 9.6 inches wide and deep, it is a substantial tower even before its 10-liter tank is filled. Dreo lists 32 dB; that is a company specification, not a measurement under your sleeping conditions. The fan is part of the humidification method, so anyone who wants a silent, passive reservoir should compare another design in person where possible.

The filling method is top access, not a quick top-up

The manual describes filling the separate tank from above after removing the upper body, wick-filter frame and support frame. Fill only to the MAX line, then reconnect the water inlet and outlet and put the assembly back together. It counts as access through the top rather than an inverted bottle, but it is much more involved than removing a lid and pouring. That arrangement opens the tank for cleaning; it also means that a full refill is a short disassembly and reassembly job. A 10-liter load is a lot of water to handle, so consider who will lift, empty and refill it.

Placement can be the deciding issue. The model-specific instructions call for a firm, level surface at least 60 cm above the floor and 30 cm from a wall or wooden furniture; they also say not to place it directly on carpet or the floor. That height requirement is easy to miss when comparing the listed 24.68-inch appliance height. You need a stable raised surface that can carry a heavy water-filled appliance, the floor-to-base clearance the manual asks for, room to lift off the upper assembly, and a nearby outlet. The humidity sensor also needs space: Dreo warns that a wall or corner within 30 cm, or dust exposure, can skew its reading.

Controls for people who will use Auto

The touch controls and display support three fan speeds, Auto mode and a timer up to 12 hours. The manual lets you choose an Auto humidity target from 30% to 90% in five-point steps; once the target is reached, the humidifier stops adding moisture. That is a useful distinction from a fixed preset if you want to select a cutoff rather than accept one default. Dreo’s app adds connected operation and voice-assistant setup through the app; the instructions say a Dreo account is needed for voice assistants. The listed package contains the humidifier, adapter, quick-start guide and manual, not a handheld remote, so do not treat an app as a physical handset.

Filter care is part of the ownership plan

The washable wick makes this different from a “no-filter” ultrasonic purchase. Dreo recommends washing the wick weekly and replacing it every three months. The manual’s safety section warns against leaving old water in the reservoir and calls for proper tank cleaning every three days; it also describes monthly descaling. A useful routine therefore includes regular tank rinsing, periodic wick washing, drying the components before storage, and budgeting for a replacement filter. Dry Mode is meant to reduce moisture left in the wick, not to replace cleaning.

The manual recommends purified or distilled water to prevent white powder residue. It specifically says not to put essential oils or liquid medication in the tank. No separate oil pad appears in the operating instructions, so this is not the right Dreo choice if adding fragrance through a designated humidifier accessory is essential. The manual also warns that water must not be added through the upper body and that the appliance should be unplugged before cleaning. These are routine details, not optional extras.

Who should choose the 774S—and what to compare

Consider the 774S if you want an evaporative mechanism, no visible ultrasonic plume, a large reservoir, a selectable Auto target and app control, and you can meet the unusually elevated placement instruction. It is less suitable if you need floor-level placement, a quick one-piece top fill, an included remote, heated warm mist, or an aroma route. The filter schedule also makes it a poor match for someone who will not maintain a wick appliance.

For a cool-mist tower with a larger 11-liter tank and a handheld remote, compare Dreo’s HM735S; it is ultrasonic and uses a separate aroma-pad route. The 747S is another 11-liter ultrasonic option with its own controls and accessory details. If heated warm mist matters, the HM717S is a separate 8-liter hybrid. Do not choose among these by capacity or a room-area headline alone: compare mechanism, physical placement, refill steps, controls and the exact care routine you are willing to repeat.
