Your needs, this model
Does it fit your priorities?
Would a six-liter tank meet your minimum capacity, or do you need more?
The official product page and DR-HHM004 manual identify a 6 L tank.
Explore this need in the finder →Is phone-app control essential, or are on-device controls enough?
The official support page identifies HM524 as Standard; the separate connected configuration is HM524S.
Explore this need in the finder →Is warm mist essential, or can a cool-mist-only operating plan work?
The HM524 is an ultrasonic cool-mist model; the exact manual documents no warm-mist mode.
Explore this need in the finder →The Dreo HM524 is the standard, non-app version of the maker’s 6-liter ultrasonic cool-mist humidifier. Its useful distinction is not a different tank or humidification method from the similarly named HM524S: it keeps Auto humidity control and a timer on the appliance itself, while the separate HM524S adds connected controls. Check the model label: this review is for HM524 / DR-HHM004, not HM524S / DR-HHM004S.
Standard and smart are separate configurations
Dreo’s current U.S. collection presents “Humidifier 524 6L” and “Smart Humidifier 524S 6L” as distinct rows. The current HM524 product record identifies its standard version as model DR-HHM004 and lists White, Gray, Black and Blue finish SKUs. The official support page labels this the Standard HM524 and links a DR-HHM004 manual; it lists the HM524S separately under the Smart version. Do not use the S suffix as decoration: these manuals describe different control arrangements. The standard HM524 has appliance buttons and a humidity display, but no app control is documented for it.
The body is a top-fill, 6-liter tank over an ultrasonic cool-mist base. Dreo lists a 500-square-foot area figure, a 28 dB noise figure, up to 60 hours of runtime and dimensions of 5.91 inches deep by 11.42 wide by 12.4 high. Those are maker specifications, not independent room tests. The longest-runtime claim is not tied to a mist level, humidity target or room condition, so it should not be treated as a guaranteed interval between refills. The maker’s webpage lists “26 Watt-hours,” while the exact DR-HHM004 manual rates the unit at 28 W; that discrepancy leaves power use unresolved.
Auto mode without a phone
The manual shows three manual mist levels and a separate Auto mode. On the HM524, the user selects a humidity target at the unit, in five-point steps from 30% to 90% relative humidity; the control panel then adjusts the mist response against its sensor reading. A 0–12-hour appliance timer is also documented. A colored indicator corresponds to the reported humidity band, and the light/display can be switched off. That is a meaningful combination for someone who wants a selected cutoff but does not want to configure an app, connect Wi-Fi or rely on voice control.
If phone control or remote settings are essential, choose the HM524S rather than assuming this standard model can be added to the Dreo app. Conversely, if you want local controls and little connected setup, the HM524’s panel can be the simpler fit. “No app” does not mean a bare mechanical dial: the standard unit still has a display, sensor-based Auto mode and several electronic controls. The manual documents only cool mist; it does not add a warm-mist option.
Filling and maintenance still shape the routine
Top filling avoids turning over a full tank. The manual’s diagrams show the tank and top cover lifting away from the base for cleaning, with the mist tube, float, water silencer and aroma tray as identifiable parts. It calls for a flat, level, water-resistant surface and at least 12 inches (30 cm) of clearance from a wall or obstacle. The manual recommends purified or distilled water to limit mineral residue; mineral content in tap water can leave visible white deposits around an ultrasonic unit. Water choice does not replace the cleaning instructions.
Plan for regular hands-on care. Dreo recommends descaling once a month and cleaning the aroma pad tray weekly. The instructions distinguish the water tank from the electrical base and advise unplugging before cleaning; do not immerse the body or put it in a dishwasher. The supplied aroma pads are a separate route for fragrance: the manual says to add oil to the pad, not to the tank water. If you do not want an aroma feature, it can simply be left unused.
Who should compare another Dreo?
Choose the HM524 if a 6-liter top-fill format, cool mist, on-unit humidity target and timer meet your plan, and an app is not a must. Compare the HM524S if connected control is worth more than keeping the simpler standard arrangement; its separate manual and suffix matter. The 5-liter HM512S is a smaller-capacity smart alternative, while the HM713S is the more relevant comparison if warm mist is a requirement. These products are not interchangeable in every setting, and the larger published area figure should not be read as proof that one unit will maintain the same humidity throughout an open-plan home.
The HM524 makes most sense as a local-control humidifier for one room where the owner can refill, clean and monitor actual room humidity. It is less suited to shoppers who need remote operation, a warm-mist mode, an independently verified output, or a power figure they can confidently use for energy-cost calculations. The maker does not provide a setting-specific runtime guarantee on the product page. For a real room, start conservatively, use a separate humidity reading if needed, and adjust the selected target rather than assuming the claimed area or runtime will apply unchanged.
