NeoClassic 650 vs 650S: same tank claim, different documented controls
The names invite a simple comparison: the NeoClassic 650 and 650S share a 6.2 L tank and Levoit’s current U.S. pages both state 320 mL/h output and coverage up to 536 square feet. The meaningful distinction is the documented operating plan, not the nominal room size. The 650 is listed with touch controls; the 650S has an exact model manual for its app-connected sensor Auto functions. Do not assume the non-S model has the smart model’s behavior.
Start with what each source actually establishes
For the 650, Levoit lists top filling, a 360-degree nozzle, touch controls, a blue-light-safe night light with adjustable color temperature, a low/Sleep noise claim of no more than 26 dB, and a maximum runtime claim of 62 hours. The product page says that a manual is in the box, but the official manual directory showed no download link for this listing when checked. It therefore does not settle the 650’s cleaning cadence, water guidance, automatic sensing, app features or chosen-humidity target for this assessment.
The 650S manual identifies the U.S. smart model as LUH-N651S-WUS and describes app control, an Auto mode and a selectable target. That manual and page also have a dishwasher-scope difference: the page limits dishwashing to the detachable tray and says to hand-wash the tank and silencer cover, so the safer comparison uses that narrower rule. Do not borrow those S-model instructions as a substitute for the 650’s unlocated manual. The 650S’s 62-hour figure is specified in its manual for Sleep mode; Levoit’s 650 page does not name the setting behind its 62-hour claim.
Choose around the routine you will actually run
Choose the 650 when top filling, higher published capacity than the NeoClassic 450, directional mist and simple touch controls meet your needs, and you can consult the in-box manual for care before use. It is not the documented option if app control, a sensor-based automatic setting or a custom humidity target is essential: those requirements must be supported by the exact model, not inferred from the 650S’s name or specifications.
Choose the 650S when remote app settings, a displayed reading or a selectable Auto target materially changes your routine. Its app adds setup and network dependence, so the smart feature is only an advantage if you expect to use it. Both are ultrasonic cool-mist humidifiers; neither shared tank capacity nor the maker’s area rating guarantees the same humidity throughout an irregular room. The 650S review explains its daily water change and three-day cleaning advice from the exact manual, while the 650 review deliberately leaves those model-specific care intervals open pending its included guide.
One caveat applies to both
Levoit’s 650 product page contains contradictory dishwasher language: broad headline copy says the removable tank and tray are dishwasher-safe, while a lower feature note specifies only the detachable tray and says that the tank and silencer cover require hand washing. Use the narrower instruction until Levoit clarifies. The 650S page and manual also differ on which wet-side pieces may go in a dishwasher; its review likewise takes the conservative tray-only approach. Neither listing supports a blanket claim that every wetted component can go in the machine.
