Honeywell ultrasonic top-fill comparisons
Honeywell HUT-220 vs HUL585 vs HUL588: top fill, cartridge care and controls
An older HUT-220 and the current-reference HUL585 and HUL588 all use ultrasonic visible cool mist and allow top filling, but they are not the same refill or control plan. The HUT-220 has a water pump, hose and demineralization cartridge between its reservoir and mist tray. The HUL585 is a simpler top-fill/dial arrangement with a separate humidity monitor recommended by its manual. The HUL588 uses electronic humidistat settings and can cycle output around its selected preset. Decide first whether you are comparing a known older machine or choosing among current-reference models, then check the exact manual’s maintenance path.
Start with the status and the controls
The licensed Honeywell store marks HUT-220W discontinued. Its assessment is useful for an existing unit or a specific old-stock offer, not as a default purchase suggestion. Opt in to earlier models in the finder before it can appear. The white HUT-220W reviewed here has a variable manual output knob and no documented humidity sensor, target or timer. Its separate empty-tank shutoff does not regulate room humidity.
The HUL585 also uses a manual output knob and does not offer a humidity setpoint in the exact HUL585 manual section. Its listed 1.25-gallon tank is larger than the HUT-220W’s one gallon, and the HUL585 manual supports sink or in-place pitcher filling. If you want simple manual output with a larger tank, compare those specific advantages against the HUT-220’s pump-and-hose path and cartridge routine. Do not infer exact HUT-220 room coverage from its retailer’s generic small-to-medium description.
The HUL588 changes the decision by adding on-unit electronic controls: its series manual distinguishes preset humidity levels and automatic cycling from the HUL585 knob. That can suit someone who needs a machine to respond to humidity rather than leave adjustment to the user. A preset is not the same as choosing any custom percentage. Compare the HUL588 manual and controls directly instead of treating a retailer FAQ light as proof that the HUL585 has a humidistat.
“Filter-free” doesn’t settle the care question
All three are ultrasonic rather than wick-fed evaporative machines, so none uses the same routine as a replaceable evaporative wick. But that does not make every model maintenance-free. The HUT-220 manual documents a demineralization cartridge and says it generally lasts about 20–30 fillings, depending on water quality. It permits operation without that cartridge only if the specified HUT-200-BLANK is fitted, and recommends distilled water in that configuration. The HUL585/HUL588 manual describes a different optional cartridge family and tells users to manage minerals, rinse carefully and clean the nebulizer. Check the cartridge name for the exact unit; neither cartridge should be assumed interchangeable just because both humidifiers make ultrasonic mist.
The HUT-220 manual’s dishwasher instructions also conflict about its hose: an early cleaning section excludes it while a later FAQ calls it top-rack safe. Do not build a low-effort care decision around the most permissive line. For the HUL585/HUL588, the shared manual does not document dishwasher-safe components. Use the identified hand-cleaning and scale-removal steps for those plans. In every case, mineral load, daily water handling, placement and weekly cleaning still matter.
Choose the need, not a generic room label
A top-fill requirement alone does not distinguish these three. An ultrasonic-method requirement likewise includes all of them. Add earlier-model opt-in and a one-gallon minimum if the HUT-220W is being considered; leave earlier models off for a current-only list. If the required feature is an output dial, HUT-220W and HUL585 are candidates, whereas an essential humidity-responsive preset points toward HUL588. If carrying a full tank is the deciding issue, compare the larger listed HUL585/HUL588 capacity against the old HUT-220’s top-pour approach. Published runtimes and room labels are claims, not measured output in your room.
Open the HUT-220W assessment, HUL585 assessment and HUL588 assessment before deciding. This family comparison cannot establish the condition of a used appliance, replacement-part availability, or the exact contents of an old package. Confirm the model label, supplied parts and current care instructions on any specific offer.
