Vornado Votiv 4 vs Votiv 7 vs MISTIC 4: refill paths and controls

Vornado’s Votiv 4, Votiv 7 and MISTIC 4 are all ultrasonic humidifiers, but their most useful difference is not a headline area figure: it is how much water you carry, where you refill, and whether you need an oil pad or automatic humidity control. Compare the exact routines before choosing a tank size.

Start with the reservoir and refill path

Votiv 4 holds 0.31 U.S. gallon (about 1.17 L), while Votiv 7 holds 0.55 gallon (about 2.08 L). Both have a removable tank and a carry handle, and both require the tank to be lifted and filled through its underside cap. Their air outlets are not fill openings. Votiv 7 gives more water between sink trips, but a larger full tank is heavier to move. Votiv 4 is easier if you prefer a small water load and accept more frequent refills.

MISTIC 4 changes the routine in the opposite direction: its four-liter reservoir fills from the top and avoids inverting the tank. That capacity is much larger than either Votiv model; it also asks you to carry more water when a refill is needed. If turning over a tank is awkward, the broad top opening may matter more than reducing the reservoir size. The MISTIC 4’s three manual mist levels and button indicators also differ from the Votiv touch-cycle interface.

Votiv’s light is not a scent feature

The Votiv 4 and 7 share a candle-like amber base glow. Their guides describe high and low mist with the light either on or off, plus an off mode. This is a simple ambience choice, not a color-changing light or a separately documented room lamp. In contrast, the Humini and MISTIC 4 manuals identify separate scent-pad routes. Both Votiv guides prohibit fragrance additives in the tank and base, and neither names an aroma pad. Do not treat the light as evidence that oils are allowed.

Manual settings are not a humidity target

All three models use ultrasonic disks for visible cool mist, but do not assume that two mist levels can hold a chosen relative humidity. Votiv 4 and 7 have a touch-sensitive cycle through fixed mist/light combinations. Their manuals contain generic troubleshooting text about set points and continuous humidity that conflicts with the specific operating modes, so automatic sensing remains unknown. MISTIC 4 instead uses level buttons for three manually selected output rates; that still does not make it an automatic humidity-control model. If a sensor-driven target is essential, look for an exact manual that documents the automatic mode and its range.

Think through the cleaning routine

Ultrasonic models avoid recurring wick replacement, but they still need water and mineral care. With hard water, Vornado suggests distilled water to reduce white dust. Votiv’s exact guides call for gentle vinegar-and-swab cleaning of the disk and warn not to rinse or submerge the base or put the parts in a dishwasher. MISTIC 4 has its own manual-specific cleaning and scent-pad instructions. Follow the guide for the exact model, empty standing water when the unit will sit, and lower or stop output if moisture forms on a wall or window. No published maximum room area replaces checking humidity where the device will operate.

Which one makes sense for your routine?

  • Votiv 4 suits a smaller reservoir and the amber glow when a 0.31-gallon tank is enough and bottom filling is acceptable.
  • Votiv 7 keeps the glow and bottom-fill arrangement but raises capacity to 0.55 gallon; its 500-square-foot, two-gallon/day and up-to-13-hour figures remain maker claims.
  • MISTIC 4 favors a four-liter top-fill tank, three manual output levels and a separate scent-pad route, at the cost of moving more water.

All three still require routine cleaning and sensible moisture monitoring. These are practical distinctions, not test rankings: room layout, water quality and willingness to refill can change which compromise matters most. Votiv 7’s official warranty statements also conflict, so buyers who value coverage length should ask Vornado about the exact HU1-0100-125 SKU.
