A useful fit for

For someone who will use on-device humidity-target control, Auto and a timer, and wants a larger tank with two fill routines and a separate VapoPad route.

The main tradeoff

It has no app or remote control, and Vicks gives conflicting medium/medium-large room labels without a numerical area rating. Ultrasonic mist can leave mineral residue; the manual calls for daily fresh water and weekly cleaning and says to dry the air filter fully.

Your needs, this model

Does it fit your priorities?

Do you want to select a relative-humidity target instead of using only a preset?

The VUL900 manual documents an Auto preset at 60% and manual target selection from 30% to 69%; it stops mist at the chosen level.

Explore this need in the finder →
Do you want a humidity-sensing Auto mode rather than a light-responsive control?

Auto uses room relative humidity and can use Turbo mist when humidity is low; no room-light sensor is documented.

Explore this need in the finder →
Is a 4.5 L tank large enough for your refill plan?

The linked VUL900 manual gives 1.2 U.S. gallons / 4.5 L; Vicks claims up to 24 hours on low, not as an independent runtime test.

Explore this need in the finder →
Is filling with a pitcher at the seated tank useful, with sink filling as an alternative?

The manual allows a pitcher at the appliance or removing the tank to fill under a faucet; this is not a tank that must be inverted to refill.

Explore this need in the finder →
Do you prefer a separate VapoPad door instead of putting oil in the water tank?

The manual documents two VapoPad positions and prohibits essential oils or inhalants in the water tank.

Do Vicks numeric room-size claims meet your minimum coverage requirement?

Vicks gives conflicting medium/medium-large text labels but no numeric square-foot figure; the unknown area ceiling cannot satisfy an essential numeric minimum.

Do you want on-device controls without requiring app or network access?

The page and manual describe touch controls on the appliance; no app or remote control is documented.

The Embrace sits between a simple one-knob ultrasonic unit and a more elaborate connected appliance. The VUL900 adds a humidity display, a fixed Auto target, three manual mist levels and a shutoff timer, while staying filter-free and cool-mist only. It is worth considering if you want to shape how the humidifier runs rather than simply switch mist on and off. The tradeoff is a specific weekly-care routine and no published numeric room-area limit to use when sizing it.

Size claims need a caveat

Vicks identifies the exact product as SKU VUL900. Its page lists a 1.2-gallon tank, up to 24 hours on the lowest setting, and dimensions of 8.4 inches wide by 13.4 inches high. The same page's room-size field says “Medium-Large,” while its descriptive text says it is ideal for medium rooms. It supplies no square-foot ceiling, so treat those labels as guidance, not a promise that it will cover a particular floor plan. If a minimum area figure is essential, choose a model whose manufacturer publishes that number rather than translating Vicks' category wording into one.

The control system is the main distinction

Its main distinction is control. On first start, Auto targets 60% relative humidity and can use Turbo mist when the room reading is low. Manual mode lets you select low, medium or high output and choose a humidity target from 30% to 69%. The unit stops misting when the chosen target is reached. That gives more hands-on control than the VUL525 or VUL545's straightforward manual mist adjustment, but the VUL900 is not an app humidifier: the official page and manual reviewed here describe controls on the appliance, not phone programming or remote operation. The timer is separate from Auto; you can set it in one-hour steps up to 12 hours, and the manual says it continues cycling to maintain the target until time expires.

A bedroom match depends on the settings you will use

For an ordinary bedroom, the question is less “How many modes?” and more “Will I use a humidity target and timer?” If you mainly want a simpler dial and can live without sensing, a VUL525/VUL545-style machine is less complicated. If you want operation to pause when the appliance senses a target, the VUL900 offers both a fixed Auto target and a separately selectable manual target. But the onboard reading is not a reason to ignore room conditions: condensation on windows or walls is the manual's signal to lower output or stop. This is an ultrasonic unit, so minerals in hard water can become white residue near the appliance. Distilled water may help reduce that tradeoff; daily fresh water and weekly cleaning are part of ownership.

Refilling and cleaning are part of the tradeoff

Filling is flexible but not weightless. The lid opens for pitcher filling while the tank is seated, or you can remove the tank and fill it under a faucet. The 1.2-gallon capacity may mean fewer refills than a smaller bedside unit, but a full tank still has to be carried; Vicks tells users to use two hands. The wide opening helps with access, yet the maintenance commitment is more specific than a quick rinse: the manual recommends fresh water daily, air-drying the tank and reservoir when out of use, and separate weekly scale-removal and disinfection processes. It says not to put parts in a dishwasher and instructs owners to rinse and fully dry the internal air filter because a damp filter can affect the humidity sensor. The manual also prohibits adding essential oils, liquid inhalants or other additives to the water tank.

Use the separate pad route

The separate VapoPad door is the scent option. The manual permits up to two pads, one per slot, and says each pad is used for up to eight hours; one menthol sample is included. That is not the same as using the water tank as a diffuser. Place the unit on a level, water-resistant surface at least 12 inches from walls, keep it at least four feet from a bedside and out of reach of children and pets, and aim mist away from walls, furniture, bedding and children. Although the VUL900 is cool-mist rather than a hot-steam appliance, those placement and electrical-safety instructions still matter.

Who should choose the VUL900?

Choose the VUL900 if you want local humidity-target control, Auto, three manual output levels, a timer and the option to fill with a pitcher, and you are prepared for the cleaning routine. Skip it if you need app control, warm mist, a documented square-foot rating, or a basic machine with minimal settings. Vicks uses wellness and cough/cold language in its marketing; this review treats the VUL900 as an appliance for adding moisture, not as a medical treatment. Its page and manual describe the intended use and limits, but do not provide independent room-performance or noise measurements.

Paper, software and setup details

Manufacturer noise claim

Vicks says whisper quiet; no dBA figure or independent noise measurement.

Manufacturer cleaning interval

Fresh clean water daily; empty and air-dry tank/reservoir when not in use; clean weekly; scale removal and disinfection are separate; rinse and fully dry the air filter.

Water and care limits

Manual calls the washable black component an Air Filter; it is not documented as a wick. Rinse under cold water and dry fully because a damp filter may affect the humidity sensor. No dishwasher use, do not submerge base, do not mix vinegar and bleach processes. The product page, rather than the manual, describes a tank light that can be turned on, dimmed and turned off; questionnaire claims that require manual confirmation must leave this field unknown. No adjustable outlet direction is claimed.
