Your needs, this model
Does it fit your priorities?
Does the nominal 2.5 L tank meet your minimum?
The exact manual identifies an approximately 0.7-gallon / 2.5-liter reservoir. A 2.4 L minimum fits; a 2.6 L minimum exceeds the documented capacity.
Explore this need in the finder →Is top filling essential?
The manual directs filling the tank from above after removing the mist cover; a bottom-fill requirement does not fit.
Explore this need in the finder →Would you accept ultrasonic cool mist rather than evaporative operation?
The EE-5402 is ultrasonic cool mist; it is not a wick-fed evaporative model.
Explore this need in the finder →Do you require a selectable timer?
The manual documents timer choices of two, four or eight hours. This is an on-device timer, not a humidity target.
Explore this need in the finder →Do you require automatic humidity control?
The manual documents button-selected mist levels and no room-humidity sensor or target; it does not meet an essential automatic-humidity need.
Explore this need in the finder →Is cool mist sufficient, or do you require heated warm mist?
The EE-5402 is cool-mist only; select it only if warm mist is not an essential requirement.
Explore this need in the finder →The Crane EE-5402 is a 0.7-gallon, top-fill ultrasonic cool-mist humidifier with three manual mist levels, a color-changing night light, and an on-device timer. Its 2.5-liter nominal reservoir is larger than the EE-5401’s half-gallon tank, but two practical claims are inconsistent: the product page says up to 24 hours and 300 square feet, while the model’s manual says up to 20 hours and 280 square feet. Keep those limits unresolved if a precise room-size or run-time threshold determines your choice.
What the larger tank does—and does not—settle
The owner manual’s technical table gives the EE-5402 about 0.7 gallon / 2.5 liters, 24 watts, and up to 20 hours per tank. The current product page repeats the tank size but advertises up to 24 hours. Likewise, the page’s maximum area is 300 square feet while the manual’s table says up to 280 square feet. Both are manufacturer statements rather than independent room tests; because they disagree, the questionnaire should not let the model satisfy a hard minimum-area question. For a room near the stated boundary, size the humidifier using a better-matched model with consistent documentation rather than assuming the higher figure is right.
The manual also gives a noise figure below 37 dB measured at three feet, while the page says below 35 dB. That is another conflict, not a measured result. What is consistent is a single removable tank, cool mist, a low/medium/high button sequence, and low-water shutoff. It is not a hybrid or warm-mist unit, and it does not use an automatic humidity target.
Timed operation is manual, not automatic humidity control
The timer cycles through two, four, and eight hours. A colored night light can be turned on or off separately. Those options support a short bedside schedule, but neither measures the room’s relative humidity nor keeps a chosen percentage. If you want the appliance to stop at a target, look for a model with a documented humidity sensor and target range; the EE-5402 manual lists none. Likewise, it has no documented app or handheld remote.
Filling is from the top after removing the mist cover, so there is no need to invert a detached tank. It is still a water-filled appliance: the manual says to keep the cover and mist chamber correctly seated, use cool water below the fill line, carry a full reservoir with two hands, and aim mist away from children, walls, furnishings, and electrical equipment. Its placement directions call for a hard, level, waterproof, nonmetallic surface with the base vent clear—not carpet or a towel. The manual also cautions against placing it on wood and calls for an elevated position at least two feet above the floor. Check that instruction against your actual room and furniture before choosing it.
Do not assume the aroma route is settled
Crane presents the EE-5402 as an aroma-capable product, and the manual’s assembly section says essential oils may be added to the water. The warranty section of that same manual, however, names essential oils or vapor pads directly in the tank as a possible reason the warranty does not apply. Because those instructions conflict, I would not promise tank-oil use or treat a separate pad tray as documented. If an essential oil route is a must-have, choose a model whose exact manual and warranty consistently identify that route; for this one, the route remains unknown.
Care is not optional. The manual tells owners to empty and dry the tank and base daily, then clean the tank and removable mist parts weekly with vinegar. It warns that standing water can collect mineral deposits or support bacterial growth. Crane advises cool tap water and suggests filtering hard water; its electronic water-level sensor can misread distilled water. A routine that leaves a filled unit sitting between uses is not a good fit.
Which Crane alternative fits a different priority?
The EE-5402 is appealing when you need more water than a half-gallon bedside unit and want straightforward buttons, top filling, a timer, and cool mist. Do not choose it solely because the web page’s room-size or runtime number is higher than the manual’s. The smaller EE-5401 has a more clearly documented 250-square-foot claim and a separate 2 ml fragrance bottle rather than a tank-oil instruction. Crane’s EE-6000 is also half-gallon and includes a special sleep-support light plus a vapor-pad tray; its manual documents those as added features, not as a larger-capacity alternative. For a requirement that depends on exact room area, consistent tank-oil compatibility, automatic control, or warm mist, consider a different documented configuration.
This assessment uses Crane’s exact EE-5402 page and owner manual. The disclosed contradictions are retained rather than averaged, and no laboratory, ownership, or room-performance test is implied.

Paper, software and setup details
Manufacturer noise claim
Exact page states below 35 dB; exact manual states below 37 dB at 3 ft. Conflicting manufacturer claims; no independent measurement.
Manufacturer cleaning interval
Empty and air-dry tank and base daily; weekly clean the tank and removable mist parts with vinegar as described in the exact manual. Do not immerse the base. Use cool tap water; filtered water is suggested for hard tap water; the manual warns distilled water may interfere with the water-level sensor.
