Connected ultrasonic humidifiers
NeoClassic 450 vs 450S: what the smart suffix changes
The NeoClassic 450 and 450S share a 4.2-liter top-fill ultrasonic format, but the “S” changes what you can verify about control. The 450’s current U.S. product page describes local mist settings, Sleep mode and a night light. The 450S’s own manual and product materials document app settings and an automatic humidity routine. Do not treat the pair as one device with a minor naming change: pick the 450 only when basic operation answers your needs, and favor the 450S when connected control or a set humidity target is essential.
Start with the requirement that cannot be optional
For each model, Levoit lists a 4.2 L tank, top access and ultrasonic cool mist. Both are in the same nominal capacity class, but neither is a warm-mist humidifier. That means asking first about mist type and refill handling will not separate them; an essential warm-mist request rules both out. A requirement for an app, sensor-driven Auto or a selectable humidity target does distinguish the documented plans: those functions are supported for the 450S, while the 450 page does not establish them. Unknown must not be read as a yes. If you need those functions, the base 450 is not a safe match on the evidence available.
What the 450 offers in its own right
The 450 is the more straightforward page-described configuration: three mist levels and a Sleep mode, set at the humidifier. It has a maker-listed maximum output of 270 mL/h ±15%, a light with two brightness levels, and a detachable Lift & Wash tray that Levoit says may be placed on the dishwasher’s top rack with mild detergent and no heat drying. That narrower tray statement should not be stretched to the water tank or electrical base. The exact product page also advertises an aroma chamber, but it does not provide the oil instructions; check the manual in the box instead of guessing where fragrance belongs.
Two online-page discrepancies make the 450 less useful if you are shopping to a hard numeric limit. The page repeats a 432-square-foot figure, but one gallery caption says 376; runtime is shown as up to 42 hours on low in some places and 40 in a summary. The noise specification also gives different ranges. Use neither the upper room-size figure nor the runtime as a guaranteed outcome. If you have a strict room-area, refill or sound threshold, ask Levoit to clarify the exact 450 claims before treating them as decisive.
What the 450S adds—and what it costs in routine
The 450S documentation identifies app control, a humidity reading, Auto operation and a selectable setpoint. That can matter if you want to change settings away from the unit, but it brings a setup and network question the basic touch-panel listing does not answer. The 450S manual specifies a daily water change and cleaning of the tank and base chamber every three days. Its instructions also discuss placement, refill and drying before storage. That is actionable, model-specific guidance, but it is still upkeep to plan for; connected control does not make cleaning disappear. The online page and filed 450S manual differ on dishwasher scope, so the conservative comparison is that the removable tray is confirmed dishwasher-safe, not every water-contact part.
Choose by what you need, not the suffix
Choose the 450 if local buttons, top-fill handling and the removable tray are enough, and you are willing to consult the included manual for its complete water and care routine. Choose the 450S when the app and documented humidity-control options are worth the added connected setup and the three-day cleaning schedule fits. If app independence, precise area performance, known aroma instructions or a specific care interval is essential, neither product page alone settles all of those points; do not make the more expensive or “smart” model stand in for missing information. These are documentation-based comparisons, not room, sound or ownership tests.
