AIRCARE Companion CM330A vs CM330D: analog or digital humidity control?
AIRCARE’s white Companion CM330AWHT and CM330DWHT share the same basic evaporative platform: a 1.6-gallon pour-in base, three fan speeds, a replaceable SGL1040 wick and the same published room-area and runtime claims. Their useful difference is the humidistat: a variable analog control on the A version versus three preset levels on the D version.
Choose how much humidity-control granularity you want
The CM330AWHT uses two rotary controls. Its exact series manual describes the analog humidistat as variable from 20% to 80%, while the fan knob selects low, medium or high. That makes it the better match if your priority is to move the set point between the digital model’s presets. The control is still a knob rather than a numeric RH display, and the manual warns that an external hygrometer may not agree with the unit’s humidistat.
The CM330DWHT replaces the control knobs with push buttons and indicator lights. The manual gives its three humidity choices as 25%, 45% and 65%; the panel does not show a numerical room reading. It suits someone who prefers repeatable button selections and does not need a target between those steps. Do not call it a custom humidity display just because the controls are digital. Both versions use a humidistat that cycles the fan around the chosen setting; neither is a continuously running output plan.
Water handling and wick care are shared
Neither version has a bottle to detach and invert. The integrated base holds 1.6 gallons, and the manual says to pour water into the sloped front grille while the unit is off. A low-water/fill indicator sits at that opening. That can avoid carrying a full tank from a sink, but a large pour still requires a controlled pitcher and room to reach the front. If water gets onto the chassis, let it dry fully before operation.
Both models use an SGL1040 wick that AIRCARE lists as included. The series guide recommends replacing it at the beginning of each season and after about 30–60 days of use, sooner in hard-water conditions. Cleaning is tied to wick changes, with separate vinegar and bleach steps. The wick captures mineral buildup; it also means the Companion is not filter-free and should not be chosen by anyone unwilling to replace and clean a consumable part. The manual says not to add essential oils to the water, and it does not document a pad or other oil route for either Companion.
How to read the published size claims
AIRCARE lists dimensions of 12 inches high by 11.5 inches wide by 14.1 inches deep, a 48-hour maximum runtime and up to 1,000 square feet. The series manual qualifies the area as an upper claim under tight construction and an eight-foot ceiling/test basis; it warns results differ by construction. The web page does not assign the maximum runtime to a speed, room or set point. These are useful comparison figures, not a promise of a particular humidity or refill cadence. The manual asks for four inches of clearance from walls or curtains, no placement on soft carpet, and distance from heat registers; lower the setting or relocate the humidifier if condensation appears.
Which exact white model makes sense?
Choose the CM330AWHT if you want a continuously variable analog set point and can work with a dial that has no numeric readout. Choose the CM330DWHT if three documented humidity presets and button indicators are preferable to a wide variable range. The control panel is the reason to pay attention to the letter in the model code; the water-handling, dimensions, wick and basic airflow plan are shared. A black finish or older CM330-series listing is a separate identity question and should be matched to its own label and warranty/parts information rather than assumed from either white product page.
Neither is a fit when your non-negotiable requirement is warm mist, remote or app control, an appliance timer, a documented oil accessory, a dishwasher-safe humidifier part or no wick replacement. For those needs, filter by an exact model whose own manual shows the requested configuration. If you need to maintain a particular room humidity, use a separate hygrometer as a cross-check and follow the manual’s condensation warning instead of treating the product-page coverage figure as a room guarantee.
